Professional Learning Opportunities for 2022

The Cuskelly College of Music - Accredited Online Courses

All year, online

During 2022 and into the start of 2023, the Cuskelly College of Music is providing online accredited training in the Kodaly philosophy and approach to teaching Music. Details about the online courses may be found here.

Whilst it is too late for us to support teachers wishing to undertake courses that started in late January of this year, TASME is willing to sponsor teachers wishing to undertake courses later in the year, and hopefully into 2023, with TASME covering 75% of the registration cost per course for those who participate. Registration costs range from $375 to $500, with the courses delivered via Zoom.

Conditions apply for teachers seeking TASME’s support, including that participants need to: have been a member of ASME for at least twelve months; reside in Tasmania; and be a practising teacher or in the process of undergoing teacher training with the view to specialising in teaching Music. TASME would also only be able to sponsor a teacher up to a maximum of two courses in a calendar year.

Pre-Service and Graduate Teacher Program

Various times and locations

TASME is pleased to offer a professional learning program for pre-service and graduate teachers. The program will include three occasions where participants can meet with experienced music teachers to discuss the ‘ins and outs’ of teaching music and the running of a music department, and the opportunity to visit schools to observe classes and rehearsals, and that with an experienced teacher present to help ‘unpack’ the lesson or rehearsal.

Three meetings will take place with Tasmanian music teachers:

Sequential unit planning with Jennie MacDonald (senior secondary teacher), Wendy Ross (high school teacher) and Kerry Bennett (primary school teacher) - 4pm to 6pm, Friday 25 March, at Elizabeth College and via Zoom
Managing a music department resources and budget (both large and small) with Andrea Marks (K-10 teacher) and Paul Radford (7-12 teacher) - 4pm to 6pm, Friday 13 May, at Emmanuel Christian School and via Zoom
Setting up an ensemble program with Glenn Schultz (Taroona High School) - Friday 9 September, at Taroona High School and via Zoom.

In addition to the above TASME is willing to organise visits to schools to see experienced teachers in operation.

Cost: Free for members and tertiary students. Attendance includes free membership of ASME for tertiary students.

Composition Workshop with Elena Kats-Chernin

Saturday 9 April, The Farrall Centre, The Friends’ School, Hobart

TASME is delighted to be able to offer Tasmanian music teachers and musicians the opportunity to spend a day with the wonderful Australian composer, Elena Kats-Chernin with the support of the Tasmanian Government and Arts Tasmania.

This workshop will be of particular interest to those who teach composition, compose music themselves or simply enjoy Elena's music. There will be opportunity to hear from Elena regarding her approach to composing music, focussing on:

the generation and development of ideas
the use of composition technique
structuring and shaping ideas into a coherent work.

Cost: $25 for members, free for tertiary students, $100 for non members, which includes one year’s membership.

‘Musicking’ Digitally with Dr. James Humberstone

Saturday 25 June, The Grange, Campbell Town

James Humberstone will introduce us to easily accessible software packages, and how to use them creatively in a student-centered way in the music classroom. James will also focus on ‘musicking’, where theory and aural skills are embedded rather than explicitly taught.

Packages include online notation and digital audio workstations, and Flip for IOS.

Cost: $50 for members, free for (tertiary) students, $130 for non-members, which includes one year’s membership.

Band Conducting Masterclass with Dr. Joanne Heaton

September, Burnie and Launceston

Joanne is Head of Bands at Haileybury College, Victoria, Past President of the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association (National), and Life Member of the Australian Band and Orchestra Directors’ Association (Victoria). Joanne will work individually with conductors on score preparation and then coach conductors in front of an ensemble. This workshop is open to both those wishing to participate as conductor and to observers.

Cost: $50 for members, free for (tertiary) students, $130 for non-members, which includes one year’s membership.

Other Opportunities

In addition to the above we are also in contact with Musica Viva in Schools about a possible workshop for teachers and TASME is also in touch with Festival of Voices about a possible workshop in July. More information will be provided when available.
