Dark Space is a side-scrolling shoot 'em up that makes use of passive helpers called orbitals. Up to two orbitals can be equipped at one time, and each unique combination results in a different weapon. Players can switch out orbitals on the fly and find their preferred combinations to conquer the levels with!
This project is the first game I programmed using GML (GameMaker Language). Working on Dark Space was a very educational experience for me, as it taught me a lot about game design practices and coding conventions. The game also set the stage for several characters and locations that would continue to reappear in my subsequent projects.
Illustrated all of the game's graphical assets using a limited 4-color palette
Designed unique level layouts for all 6 levels across 2 difficulty modes
Created 28 unique weapons, including projectiles, melee attacks, bombs, and more
Designed a vast variety of enemies and bosses that are unique to each level
Implemented optional orbital upgrades that enhance various aspects of the weapons
