Hsiang-Hsin "Malikah" Wang
Malikah used to work in the cinema as a projectionist for seven years, also cooperated with most of the film festivals in Taiwan, and was very much in love with film during 2000-2010, also working on set in the sound department eventually. Then unexpectedly, met tap dance! At 2011, she thought it’ll be the end of the world soon, so she went to NYC for studying tap dance, and jumped into a completely different world, which helped her develop and understand herself better.
After coming back to Taiwan, Malikah started exploring the possibility of combining tap dance with storytelling, and theatrical elements, resulting in performances such as《Knock! Knock! The Deathwatch Beetle》,《Stampf! im Kulturzug》.
As an artist, Malikah is always eager to explore different ways to express herself, trying out various art forms like weaving, visual arts or installation. she's passionate about learning and exchanging with other cultures, there are endless stories of her hitch-hiking trip from LA to NYC and the journey of cycling across Eurasia, that continue to be a great inspiration for her creative process.
Artist Statement
As a tap dancer, Malikah believe rhythm is within everyone, so she create the connection through our heartbeats. And the condition of being “in the moment” is what attract her the most of this beautiful art form, therefore, she often take it as a reminder and tend to invite/challenge the audience to join, to play and share the magical moment together. It’s important for Malikah to build the connection with audiences and the world through performance or artwork.
The power of cooperation is fascinating to Malikah too. The opportunity to combine tap dancing with multi art forms, and experience of exploring/ experimenting/ jamming with different artists/musicians is truly inspiring. Listen to each other, find the connection, react and respond. Let’s play together!
