Wednesday, February 1 was our first deployment at St. Cruz Elementary School. The principal gave us a tour of the school campus along with my colleagues. We stopped in each classroom where we met the teachers and students. I was both super excited and nervous at the same time because this marked the beginning of our journey to become teachers someday. It was also a new experience for us. The principal showed us around the school, room by room, introducing us to the teachers and children. This deployment marked the start of walking through the phase of eventually becoming a teacher in the future. Thursday, February 2 was also our first observation in an actual classroom, where we could observe the teacher teaching their class. I was assigned to observe in a Grade 5 class. There, I met a diverse group of students from different backgrounds. It was an engaging, fun, exciting, and at the same time shocking experience because as the teacher was discussing at the front, I noticed that most of the students didn’t listen, some students were talking and others were playing with spiders while the teacher didn’t mind and just continued discussing her lesson. It shook me and made me realize that this is the reality and you need to make adjustments when you become a teacher. Classroom management is a big challenge where students may disengage or become distracted. As an observer, I am just starting to understand what it takes to effectively teach different types of students each day. Overall, it was a fun experience meeting the students as I felt their warm welcome, love, and smiles. Despite some classroom management issues, the students seemed engaged when interacting directly with observers. It was rewarding to feel their positive energy and reception during our visit.
