TAS came together from keen amateurs  which gradually attracted the attention of archaeologists both retired and working . Over many years it has evolved to support our heritage through all forms of archaeology from desk based assessments of written history from archives, through surveying using advanced geophysical equipment to putting the spade in the ground and searching for evidence.  All this is recorded and placed in publicly accessible archives including the Historic Environment Records. Each year social events include trips to sites, museums and days out.
