Welcome to Kaohsiung!
Kaohsiung, Taiwan's largest port city, invites you to explore its vibrant mix of modern architecture, artistic hubs, rich culture, and beautiful waterfront scenery. Once an industrial center, Kaohsiung has transformed into a dynamic and creative city with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Getting around is easy, and there's something for every traveler!
Sizihwan Bay is known for its beautiful sunset and natural reefs, and the area includes scenic spots like the Siziwan Beach, Seaside Park, and the former British Consulate at Takao. You can enjoy the view of the sea or gaze over Kaohsiung Port. The inscription on the gate of the Shaochuan artillery position, currently classified as a third-grade national heritage site, reads “Kaohsiung Town North Gate.” It was built at the same time as Cihou Fort to cover different fields of fire. Today, the cannons are gone—only 3 gun emplacements remain for people of the future to wonder about.
The Cijin District is a slender island in front of Kaohsiung that serves as a natural breakwater for the harbor. The district is filled with seafood restaurants selling freshly caught seafood, which can be prepared right after you pick it. If you have only a brief period in Kaohsiung, skip Cijin. If you have more than a day, you will find the island to be a pleasant and relaxing place to take a break. Most of the major sites can be seen within two hours. Cijin is connected to the rest of Kaohsiung City by tunnels, but the transportation of choice is one of the many ferries that traverse the harbor.

The Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum has evolved from a mountaintop bamboo forest to the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan. It integrates collections, research, education, leisure, and tourism. It has Asia's largest and tallest seated Buddha, the Fo Guang Buddha, as well as relics of the Buddha and a caisson painted with a design representing the emergence of great compassion. Other attractions include the Sanhao Children's Museum, the Five Harmonies Pagoda, a botanical garden, and an area for enjoying tea. Admission to the museum is free, and it is a barrier-free facility dedicated to giving people confidence, joy, hope and convenience.
Indulge in delicious Taiwanese street food and soak up the lively atmosphere at famous spots like Liuhe Tourist Night Market or the local-favorite Ruifeng Night Market.
Kaohsiung MRT: The backbone of the city's transport, the MRT features two main lines (Red and Orange) that intersect at the stunning Formosa Boulevard Station, famous for its breathtaking "Dome of Light" art installation. The MRT connects major transport hubs like the Main Station, High-Speed Rail Station (Zuoying), and the airport, as well as key districts and attractions. Trains run frequently from around 6 am to midnight.
Circular Light Rail: This scenic route loops around the city center, connecting popular spots like the Pier-2 Art Center, Kaohsiung Music Center, Love River Bay, and the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center.
City Buses: An extensive network of city buses covers areas not reached by the MRT or LRT, including sightseeing routes and connections to ferry terminals.
YouBike: Rent a YouBike from numerous stations for short trips or leisurely explorations, especially along the Love River or within parks.
Travel Tip
For seamless travel on the MRT, LRT, buses, and even ferries and YouBike, get an iPASS card or an EasyCard. You can purchase and top these up at MRT stations and convenience stores (7-Eleven, OK, Hi-Life, and Family Mart).
