The Socially Aware AI (SAI) focus area is a section of TAIGA, Umeå University's center for transdisciplinary AI.
We define SAI as the study of AI systems capable of accounting for a social context surrounding them. These systems include a broad range of human-centered AI, such as robots that recognize the person they talk to and adapt their behaviors accordingly or LLM-based solutions that can identify whether a discourse is discriminatory. They also include human-like AI, such as virtual characters for entertainment, training or simulations that can engage in realistic social behavior.
