Enhancing Immersiveness in AR-Based Product Design

Abstract

    • Recently, various AR-based product design methodologies have been introduced. In this paper, we propose technologies for enhancing the immersive realization of virtual objects, where, by adapting tangible objects we can provide touch sensation to users. A 3D model of the same scale overlays the whole area of the tangible object so the marker area is invisible. This contributes to enhancing immersion. Also, the hand occlusion problem when the virtual objects overlay the user’s hands is partially solved, providing more immersive and natural images to users. Finally, multimodal feedback also creates better immersion. In our work, both vibrotactile feedback through page motors and sound feedback are considered. In our scenario, a game-phone model is selected, by way of proposed augmented vibrotactile feedback, hands occlusion-reduced visual effects and sound feedback are provided to users. These proposed methodologies will contribute to a better immersive realization of the conventional AR system.

Air-Jet Button Effects in AR

Abstract

  • Providing haptic cues can generate increased levels of presence in users as they interact with tangible objects. In this paper, we present button effects delivered by air-jet displays with the aim of providing click-like sensations when virtual buttons in an AR environment are pressed. We derive the profile of the haptic output by measuring the force profile of real physical buttons. To validate our concept, we have built an AR system featuring a cellular phone model which users can tangibly manipulate through a physical AR marker object. When users press a button on the model, they experience a corresponding click-like feeling at their fingertip. In this way, our system enables users to press a button on an AR model and experience a force profile generated by our pneumatic array directly derived from the act of pushing a button in the real world.

Graphical Tangible User Interface for a AR Authoring Tool in Product Design Environment

Abstract

  • We are suggesting a graphical tangible user interface for augmented reality (AR) authoring tool in product design Environment. This user interface can be used for more efficient and intuitive manipulation of a 3D virtual model in initial prototyping. A game-phone of portable electronic products is selected for our target authoring product. The suggested authoring methods exploit the advantages of both graphical user interface (GUI) and tangible user interface (TUI). Authors can intuitively make adjustments for many parameters using the TUI, and then they can do the same thing more precisely using the GUI. Through many tries and experiments, the suggested combined GUI and TUI authoring method was easier to make a prototype, also it contained fewer errors and took a shorter time to manipulate.
