KSU Tribal TAB in partnership with a panel of tribal professionals, present a series of workshops on mapping basic elements of tribal brownfield inventories, with techniques to include appropriate cultural knowledge. We examine how modern (free) GIS tools, which are generally available, easy to use, and capable of keeping data confidential, give tribes the ability to influence public projects that affect them and create planning tools that can incorporate tribal values and goals in standard agency procedures. In that regard we offer some agency definitions of TEK and how it applies in various circumstances that involve EPA, OLEM, HUD, USDA and Interior, and how tribes can use TEK to influence agency decision-making.

Topics covered include:

  • Approaches to mapping for cultural and environmental knowledge sharing

  • Considering Traditional Knowledge in tribal planning

  • How to use agency definitions of TEK in the federal NEPA process
