Role as a mentor
In a sense, this is perhaps one of the weakest points of my mentorship. Being a mentor requires a certain security and a lot of responsibilities. When guiding someone, you have to act with a certain security and confidence in what you are doing. At first, I doubted whether I was ready to mentor someone else. However, over time, I realized that the responsibility of mentoring is not something to be overwhelmed by. One is also still learning, and there are always resources and people to consult. Any problem can be solved if you put your mind to it, and it never hurts to ask for help. Above all, one must be committed to guiding the other to success, the success of the other is the success of oneself and there must always be a respectful dialogue.
Objectives
I will not hide the fact that at the beginning of the mentoring we had problems with Leandro. We both made mistakes, but we also committed ourselves to solve those problems, and we succeeded. The students were able to communicate using what they were taught. There is also my own objectives to consider. I was always able to give feedback to Leandro, in fact, I was able to teach him some fundamental things about planning and I think we came to understand each other cordially.
Mentee's feedback
Leandro told me things that I already suspected, that I should give my opinion without doubting my knowledge so much, and speak in a more direct way. He made me understand that correcting him, as a mentee, is not a punishment but a learning process. On the other hand, he told me that he always felt at ease being able to talk openly with me and ask me questions.
To teach another is to relearn. Every time it was necessary to correct my mentee, I doubted my opinion, which is why I went back to instruct myself to be able to guide my mentee with the appropriate arguments.
Being a mentor allows us to resize the relationships we have with our colleagues. Learning to correct a peer is necessary so that both can grow.
Being a mentor promotes growth, and not only of the mentee. Whenever a problem arises, a mentor must offer ways to solve it creatively and efficiently, and solving others' problems is also learning for oneself. By teaching others, I learn too.
Mentoring is a very enriching process for teacher formation. It is to see teaching from someone else's point of view and to try to share one's own point of view. One learns from someone else's problems and solutions. Above all, mentoring compels teachers to be better in order to guide others.
