Searching with MeSH
Having now identified our major concepts we can translate some of these terms into Medline
Let's start with looking at depression
Click on the Resources tab in the toolbar and select databases and eResources
Find Medline (Ovid) under 'M'
In the Medline search box type the word depression
You will be taken to a list of Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) that Medline thinks fit your topic
These are only suggested terms and may not be correct for your topic. To check, click on the information logo (scope note) to see a detailed description
Click on the information symbol for the first result
You can see here that this heading refers to the emotion of depression and not to the medical disorder, which is indexed as depressive disorder
Click on the Search tab on the top left of the page to return to the home screen
Type depressive disorder into the search box
You can check the scope note (information logo) to check you now have the right heading
Tick the select box
Tick the Explode button (this will then also include narrower forms of this topic)
Tick Include All Subheadings
Tick Continue
Repeat this process for your other 2 concepts of older adults and exercise
You should now see something similar to the search below
