Ra, the Egyptian sun god, was the most important Egyptian deity. He was the most powerful god in the land, and created the human race from his tears and sweat so he would not be lonely. Because Ra was the creator, everyone would come to him with their prayers and problems. He would travel the sky in his solar barge, day after day. For hundreds of years, this was the way of life in Egypt for Ra.
Eventually, Ra reached a breaking point. He decided he needed a place to escape from the constant stream of prayers and problems. It came time he had a place of his own to retreat when overwhelmed.
It was then that Ra ordered the construction of the pyramids. Being the sun god, he decided the pyramid would be the best structure to honor him. He intended for the pyramids to serve as safe havens for himself, but believed in the significance of having a structure that shot towards the sky and sun to signify that they were property of Ra. He also ordered for the base corners to each point in a cardinal direction, emphasizing that Ra had power over all the land, no matter where one was.
The pyramids served their purpose, and Ra found peace and honor.
Yet, something was missing.
Ra, when needing time away, desired something more than just a safe space. To compensate, he had different amenities built at the bottom of each pyramid. His favorite was the Waffle House in the Pyramid of Khafre. It was his favorite because during construction he called upon the magicians in the land to create a sacred sanctuary for him there. The magicians gathered and pondered what could serve such a great god. Their solution was the world’s first Waffle House. The breakfast food represented the sun rising, and as the sun god, this pleased Ra. He would park his sun barge every morning to grab a waffle made with Egyptian emmer wheat to start his day. This place truly was his safe haven.
This Waffle House meant more to Ra than just escape. He knew the magicians had created a sacred space, and that in this place more magic would be unlocked.
The magicians came to him and said, “Oh Great Ra, we have blessed this space. We wrote blessings in hieroglyphics on the walls to continually bring peace and honor to this space. This place will be a source of power for the Land of Egypt, and will change the course of our history.”
They would soon realize how quickly it would change their lives.
Ra got comfortable in his routine of stopping by Waffle House every morning. When he would go, he always expressed how tired he was. The magicians behind the counter created a special drink to help out the sun god. This drink was called coffee. It woke him up, and Ra eventually needed it every morning.
Ra felt the magic in this drink, and knew he could do more with it. One day, Ra decided to extend the magic by adding his tears and sweat, which he used to create the human race. He knew by using his divine power to create life, he could also bring the dead to life.
Once Ra created this new form of magic, he summoned Osiris and made him the god that symbolized death and resurrection. He shared this magic with Osiris so he would keep it sacred.
Even though the divine power was only shared with the gods of life and death, Ra still wanted his human creations to experience a small bit of magic. It was through this that he shared his magic drink, coffee, with his people and then the world.
Ever since then, coffee has been used by millions to go from “dead to alive”.
This was the first time this Waffle House changed the course of Egyptian history...but it would not be the last.

Author’s Note:
This is an original story to set up the creation of the Waffle House, origin of coffee, and the aspect of Egyptian magic of bringing the dead to life. I did not necessarily base this story off of a single reading, but rather took pieces of information to create a story that was uniquely my own. This included aspects such as information about the pyramids, Ra’s sun barge, and his creation of the human race. Wikipedia was a great source to learn more about the origin of Ra. In some versions of Egyptian stories he has divine parents (Neith or Ptah) but this was an origin story where he was self-created, which is common in many Egyptian stories. I used other sources as well to learn more about other Egyptian aspects of my story. I was hoping through this I could set up a project that I could feel like was completely mine, and I knew I could take pride in my work. This was an exciting idea to me and I knew I wanted to make Waffle House a magical place. I personally believe it to be the most magical place on earth, and wanted to see how I could fuse one of my favorite places with magic!
