PYP 5 learner, Ryan Tingre, an international football player, delivered an inspiring guest session for PYP 2 students on the importance of self-awareness. Through stories from the pitch, he illustrated how recognizing our strengths, abilities, and passion and pursuing what we truly love can guide us toward making conscious, positive choices that lead to success. His message encouraged our younger learners to begin their own journey of becoming more self-aware.

Embracing the beauty of Hindi and the stories it carries – Happy Hindi Diwas!
This Hindi Diwas, our PYP learners celebrated the richness and significance of Hindi, one of India’s most cherished languages. As part of Hindi Week, they engaged in thoughtful activities such as poster making, poetry recitation, and autobiography presentations, which enabled them to develop a deeper appreciation of how language serves as a link to culture, heritage, and community. Through these experiences, they realized that language is not merely a collection of words, but a bridge to understanding, creativity, cultural pride, and connections that endure for a lifetime.

PYP 1 students were engaged in an insightful guest session by Ms. Shweta Modi, aligning with the How We Organize Ourselves theme and the line of inquiry, Ways to Organize Our Thoughts and Time. Ms. Modi introduced simple calm-down strategies to help students pause, reflect, and think clearly before responding. She highlighted how organizing thoughts supports better decision-making and how managing emotions saves time and fosters harmony. Students later reflected on a key takeaway to apply in their lives, understanding how better thought and time organization lead to a smoother, more balanced daily life.

Ms. Anjum Rahim conducted an engaging session on Encouraging Growth Mindset Through Sketchnotes. She skillfully introduced participants to the concepts of fixed and growth mindsets. The highlight was using sketchnoting—a creative visual note-taking technique combining words, images, and symbols—to explore these concepts. Ms. Rahim demonstrated how sketchnotes help learners visualize their thinking, boosting reflection, creativity, and deeper understanding. As part of our Well-being unit, a guest speaker session was organized to nurture a growth mindset and highlight its importance. We were grateful to have Ms. Deepa Prasad, HOD of the SEN department, lead this session. Through engaging games, thought-provoking videos, and inspiring stories, she connected deeply with our learners. The session not only inspired them but also encouraged meaningful reflections, with many already expressing how they can apply a positive mindset in their own learning journey.

The session was taken by Danish Dalmiya on the topic of How Being Self-aware Helps You in Achieving Goals. Learners reflected on what they are good at and even set a small personal goal for themselves. It was inspiring to see an older student guide the younger ones with such confidence, making the session both engaging and encouraging.

International Dot Day

International Dot Day, inspired by Peter H. Reynolds’ book The Dot, encourages children to make their mark and see where it leads. Our young artists celebrated the day by exploring creativity, self-expression, and confidence, using dots as a starting point for imagination. Learners created vibrant dot-filled fish, crafted polka dot pumpkins inspired by Yayoi Kusama, and explored mandala art with dots, blending balance, repetition, and individuality. Through these hands-on experiences, students developed a deeper appreciation for self-expression.

We were delighted to host Sharanya Sriram, Founder of S.L.A.T.E., for an inspiring session on Spiritual Well-being with our PYP 5 learners. Through stories and reflections, Ms. Sriram explored What is Spirituality?, framing it as a compass for purpose, peace, and resilience. She also connected this to the Japanese concept of Ikigai—the intersection of passion, skill, need, and livelihood—as a path to discovering meaning. The session was a valuable addition to our learners' Well-being unit, promoting inner growth and holistic development.

Celebrating International Mindedness Through Theatre

Grade 3 students showcased six plays in six different languages — French, Marathi, English, Spanish, Korean, and Hindi — each highlighting a unique aspect of international mindedness such as greetings, festivals, travel, food, and friendship.
Through these performances, students explored how cultures around the world express shared human values in diverse ways. The event not only celebrated linguistic diversity but also nurtured empathy, respect, and global awareness — true reflections of what it means to be internationally minded.

From Discovery to Display- Our Young Learners Shine!!
This month, PYP learners amazed their parents with presentations from their Unit of Inquiry during the first Student-Led Conference.
Taking ownership of their learning, they guided parents through their discoveries, shared research, answered questions, and demonstrated a deep understanding of the Central Idea. Through role play, songs, and reflections, students presented what they know, which helped them to discover that their voice is powerful and valued. It was a proud moment for them to showcase their growth in action.

A Stellar Space Week!
PYP students successfully concluded an inspiring Space Week filled with curiosity and collaboration. Field Trip to Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park

Under the Unit of Inquiry ‘Biodiversity and Human Interactions that Affect the Balance of an Ecosystem’, PYP 4 learners embarked on an exciting field trip to Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, Katraj, gaining insights into the diversity of life forms and human influence on ecosystems. Our exploration began with a visit to the Snake Park, followed by spotting diverse carnivorous and herbivorous animals like deer, sambar, tigers, cheetahs, and lionesses, all uniquely adapted to their habitats. Learners also explored the zoo's various biomes, discussing how water hyacinths in lakes affect aquatic ecosystems. Learners remained actively engaged throughout, connecting real-world observations to classroom learning. The trip enhanced their understanding of biodiversity, adaptation, and ecological balance.

They witnessed the different phases of milk processing and packaging, facilitating a greater understanding of how matter can alter its state. Field Trip to Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park

As part of the Unit of Inquiry Sharing the Planet, PYP 2 learners visited the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, Katraj. They observed a variety of animals, including monkeys, snakes, crocodiles, deer, tigers, and peacocks, learning how each adapts to its surroundings. For example, snakes use camouflage to stay safe, deer rely on their speed to escape predators, and tigers use their sharp claws and stealth to hunt. Learners also noticed how animals find food, protect themselves, and adjust to different habitats. The trip gave them real-life examples of survival instincts and adaptations, making their classroom learning more meaningful and engaging

Exploring the World of Matter in the Chemistry Lab!

Grade 3 students, as part of the Unit of Inquiry ‘Matter’, participated in enriching hands-on learning experience at the school's Chemistry Lab. Under the expert guidance of Ms. Reena, the school's chemistry specialist, they delved into the fascinating world of changes in the states of matter.
Students had the opportunity to observe various scientific instruments, such as beakers and flasks, and learned how liquids adapt to the shape of their containers. A highlight of the visit was an engaging experiment demonstrating chemical change and the water cycle. This allowed the students to gain firsthand insight into the transformation of liquid into gas and its subsequent condensation back into liquid.

Our PYP 1-5 students recently participated in the 5th virtual IISP Literary fest held on 15th and 16th October. They participated in various writing and speaking activities, showcasing their innate creativity and imagination. Veer Jain of PYP 3 bagged third position in Spontaneo, spinning an enchanting tale with a given set of words. From creative storytelling and poetry recitation to impromptu speech and pitching a book plot, the festival truly celebrated the power of language. These inter-school events make an excellent occasion of collaborative learning and growing of PYP as a community across the globe.

She used personal anecdotes, pictures, and videos of her experience nurturing a caterpillar to illustrate the process. On November 24th, PYP 4 learners were treated to an illuminating poetry session by the distinguished guest poet, Vickrant Siing. In a captivating demonstration, he used words spontaneously offered by the children to forge an immediate poem—beautifully illustrating how simple, everyday moments and authentic feelings can be transmuted into expressive verse. Mr. Siing then expertly guided the young minds through the alchemy of poetry, showing how their raw emotions, nascent thoughts, and personal experiences could be shaped into meaningful lines and vivid imagery. By sharing and narrating excerpts from his own published works, he granted the students a glimpse into the creative process, reinforcing the idea of poetry as a natural vehicle for self-expression. The entire experience clearly left our budding writers feeling both galvanised and eager to approach their own poetic endeavors with newfound confidence and unbridled imagination.

Our PYP 1–5 students celebrated Fibonacci Day which is observed on November 23rd, a date chosen because 11/23 represents the first numbers of the Fibonacci sequence—1, 1, 2, 3.
The day is observed to help students appreciate the beauty of mathematical patterns and how they appear in nature and everyday life.
Through hands-on activities such as building number sequences, creating Fibonacci-inspired art, and spotting spirals in nature, students discovered how this special pattern shows up in flowers, shells, pinecones, and more, helping them strengthen their reasoning skills and see the meaningful connection between math and the natural world.

This excursion allowed the students to delve deeper into how ancient communities engaged in exploration and resource utilization. Learners meticulously explored the site, closely examining its unique structure and learning about its historical significance, particularly its early use as a place of shelter and its connection to the ancient Shiva temple. The visit was significantly enhanced by a guest session led by Ms. Archana, who provided a detailed historical context and expertly guided the students, helping them fully comprehend the purpose and creation of the monument. This deeply meaningful experience successfully allowed our learners to solidify their understanding of historical exploration within a tangible context.

SIS PYP Literary Festival

SIS successfully hosted its vibrant Literary Festival from November 26th to 28th, a three-day celebration designed to foster a deep love for reading and creative expression across the Primary Years Programme. The festival began with inspiring virtual story sessions, featuring the interactive storytelling of Ms. Peenal for PYP 1-2 learners and an insightful discussion on authorship by Ms. Sharnya Sriram for PYP 3-5 students. Throughout the event, students engaged in enriching literacy activities like "Painting a Story with Words," Picture Comprehension, and fun riddles. The celebration culminated with Character Parade, where both students and teachers dressed as their favourite literary figures, complemented by the collaborative creation of a vibrant graffiti wall dedicated to sharing their collective passion for literature through words and illustrations.

The 2nd Student-Led Conference provided a meaningful opportunity for parents to connect with their child’s learning in class. The learners led their parents through a variety of written work, class activities, and classroom displays that highlighted their growth during the unit. Students explained the processes behind their tasks, shared the goals they had set for themselves, and reflected on the progress they made in different subjects; they demonstrated how their skills had developed—from early drafts to final pieces. In a truly captivating session, Mr. Jay shared personal stories from his travels—tales of discovering new places, meeting diverse people, and overcoming unexpected challenges. He spoke candidly about how exploring the world helped him grow personally, think differently, and gain a deeper, more meaningful understanding of life.His lively, real-life experiences completely sparked our students' imagination, showing them the endless possibilities that await. AMI Project: A Journey of Creativity and Connection

From February 3rd to 5th, Grade 5 students participated in the AMI Project, a creative initiative focused on identity and self-expression. Led by Mondragon University interns Ms. Hannah and Mr. Martin, the workshops used hands-on art to help learners share their personal stories. Through these interactive sessions, students built confidence and explored their emotions in a safe, inclusive space. The project encouraged everyone to celebrate their unique voices while connecting with their peers. PYP 4 learners brought the "Force and Motion" unit to life during an engaging field trip to the Science Park, Pimpri-Chinchwad. A highly engaging and interactive guest session on the Digestive System was conducted for the PYP1 students. The session was led by one of our parent community members, Ms.Sanober Fitter , a Registered Nurse (Labor & Delivery and Medical/Oncology) from Overlake Hospital, Bellevue, Washington, USA, whose specialty includes Perinatal-Fetal Demise Care. The session transformed biology into a hands-on adventure, making the journey of food both memorable and easy to grasp. Through interactive demos, students explored how their bodies function while learning the "why" behind healthy eating. Their enthusiasm and thoughtful questions truly brought the PYP philosophy of experiential learning to life. Healthy Choices in Motion: Our Youngest Learners Connect Dance and Nutrition
PYP1 students recently stepped out of the classroom for an energetic field trip to the Yuteka Trripati Dance studio, where they explored how their choices impact their well-being. Hosted by PYP1 parent and contemporary artist Yuteka Trripati, the students engaged in dance movements that enhanced their coordination and self-expression. They were also joined by fitness consultant Siddhart Naobrah, who shared simple, sustainable tips on balancing nutritious food with staying active in fun ways. This hands-on experience helped our youngest learners see the real-world link between physical movement and feeling great. Discovered the Link Between Land and Settlements
PYP 2 learners recently took their inquiry beyond the classroom with a visit to Parvati Hill to study landforms and settlements. From the summit, they gained a bird's-eye view of Pune, observing how the city’s homes and roads have naturally shaped themselves around the hill's elevation. The students identified the physical features like rocky surfaces and steep slopes, while discussing how these landforms influence where people choose to live. Beyond the geography, it was a meaningful moment for reflection on responsible citizenship; the children discussed the importance of protecting our natural landmarks and keeping our environment clean. This hands-on experience turned their classroom lessons into a real-world understanding of how we live in harmony with the land.

A budding artist, Saisha Malani, student of PYP 5 took an initiative to exhibit her mesmerizing artwork featuring over 50 paintings. The collection includes various themes such as collage, silhouettes, abstract, charcoal pencil sketch, spray painting, Indian Madhubani art, etc. During an interview, she mentioned that she started painting at a very young age. As a student with integrity, she acknowledged her parents for being constant sources of support and encouragement as well as her teachers who inspired and assisted her. Learners have learnt about the concept of a growth mindset and its importance in our daily lives. It was amazingly put together with real-world examples and anecdotes. Learners had wonderful time sharing their ideas and challenged themselves by collaborating with peers and framing ‘I Can’ statements. The session concluded with each student receiving bookmarks with positive statements written on it.

Spanish Language Day

Our PYP learners celebrated Spanish Language Day on the 12th of October and showcased International Mindedness, Multilingualism and Cultural Diversity through songs, skits and dance performances.
PYP 1 and 2 celebrated this day by learning and performing songs and rhymes in Spanish. PYP 3 presented a short musical depicting the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a beautiful butterfly, illustrating ‘the acceptance of oneself in society’. PYP 4 performed rhymes and traditional songs incorporating dance moves of South America. The audience also enjoyed a Spanish tongue twister challenge. PYP 5 performed a song about letter sounds and a skit about Spain and Peru in which they enlightened the audience through their dialogues and shared their understanding of the cultural similarities and differences between the two nations.

Theatre Art: learners inquired into the achievements of renowned artists such as Marcel Marceau, Lee Strasberg, Girish Karnad and their contributions to the field of Theatre Art.
Music: learners explored the accomplishments and contributions of acclaimed artists like Yiannis Chryssomallis, Steve Vai and also the rock band The Beatles.
Visual arts: learners recreated artwork by artists Bruce M. Sherman and Yulia Brodskaya using various craft supplies.

The week culminated on February 27th with students performing dances, songs, poems, sangeet natak, a quiz, and a presentation on the state of Maharashtra for their peers and teachers. The theme for the National Science Day 2024 highlights a focus to promote appreciation for science, technology, innovation and accomplishments of Indian scientists and to address challenges through indigenous technologies for developing India. Our PYP learners watched videos on ‘Indigenous Technology for Viksit Bharat’, conducted science experiments for their peers, made models, participated in science quiz, etc. to marked and celebrate the significance of the day. A mini-science exhibition ‘The Galactic Odyssey’ was also held by students which featured creative projects, models, presentations, booklets, charts, brochures and posters.These engagements allowed our young scientists to understand that science is everywhere and can be used for tackling global challenges and creating a more sustainable future for our planet.

Our learners embraced the joy of learning and the endless possibilities that Pi Day presents each year. Pi Day celebrations in PYP saw learners eagerly engaging in fun games and activities, watching videos, making Pi themed charts, etc. Learners celebrated the mathematical constant π (Pi) and explored the significance of the day and the fascinating properties of Pi. They reflected on the importance of mathematics in our everyday lives and its role in understanding the world around us. These activities sparked lively discussions as our learners shared their insights and observations, deepening their appreciation for the beauty and complexity of mathematics. Learners also used circular objects and measuring tape to measure circumference and diameter to find Pi, a constant for all circular objects. They verified the same using an online calculator. Pi Day served as a reminder for our learners of the boundless possibilities for exploration and discovery that await those who embrace the wonders of mathematics.
