Assignments that have been cheated on or plagiarized will receive a zero, and any infraction will be reported to the Dean of Students. A better alternative for preserving academic honesty is to reach out to me. I will be glad to assist you both in your work and in upholding good Academic Honesty practices.
Plagiarism consists of presenting someone else's work as your own. Give credit where credit is due. Cheating consists of manipulating your coursework in a dishonest or unfair way. Here are some examples of what constitutes cheating: getting help from friends, relatives, or coworkers; presenting other people’s ideas as your own; using translation tools like Google Translate, SpanishDict, AI, or others instead of your own Spanish production; utilizing answer-sharing sites like Course Hero; manipulating an online exam; sharing homework/exam questions/answers among peers; recycling previous work.
All assessments (writing assignments, oral assignments, presentations, etc.) must be your original work. Because the focus of this class is on developing a second language and AI undermines that skill-building, AI use is not allowed. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as ChatGPT, is prohibited. The use of AI tools is considered plagiarism in this course, and disciplinary actions fall under the plagiarism guidelines.
I strive to create a learning environment for my students that supports a diversity of thoughts, perspectives and experiences, and that honors your identities (including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity and orientation, ability, religious and spiritual beliefs, and socioeconomic status).
To help accomplish this, if you have a name and/or set of pronouns that differ from those that appear in your official Mendocino College records, let me know. If something is said in class (by anyone) that makes you feel uncomfortable, please talk to me. I want to be a resource for you and to make our classroom an inclusive environment.
If you plan to be absent due to critical medical or legal reasons, contact me as early as possible. We will discuss how we may reach a mutual understanding on how you can meet the requirements for this course. Please note that personal travel or family events do not constitute a critical reason for absences.
Students who miss the equivalent of two weeks’ worth of homework may be dropped from the course. Please stay in touch with me so that I may be aware of any situation that is affecting your progress.
Although dropping should be a last resort, if you consider at any point that it is in your best interest to drop this course, I may be able to assist you.
You can find the semester's drop deadlines in the Mendocino College Calendar for the Academic Year 2024-2025:
Drop deadline with a refund and without a W is January 31.
Drop deadline without refund and with a W is April 18.
