This course will foster the acquisition of elementary Spanish language in a cultural context. It is designed to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills to communicate with Spanish speakers. The material is presented within the context of cultures, histories, and peoples of Spanish-speaking societies, including the US. Students will interact with authentic language within a Spanish immersion environment.
SPN 200 is taught in Spanish (about 90%).
By the end of the semester, you will be able to apply your new skills and knowledge in the outside world. These include:
Express orally about familiar topics related to school, home, family, food, leisure activities, and self.
Identify main facts and recall descriptions of people and places in readings.
Compose texts that narrate, describe, and express basic viewpoints about familiar topics in the present tense.
Identify key aspects of Spanish-speaking cultures, histories, and societies.
SPN 200 is designed for novice students who have not taken any Spanish courses previously and assumes no prior knowledge of the language. If you are just beginning or if you have taken some Spanish in the past, this is the course for you!
If you have taken two years or more of high school Spanish (or equivalent) or if you are a native speaker, I encourage you to take a course that will match your language skill level. We have designed those courses with you in mind and I am confident that you will find them more rewarding because you will be able to advance in your fluency, accuracy, and spelling. If your level is too advanced for this class, you will be bored and your classmates will feel self-conscious about their own skills. Please consider enrolling at the appropriate level.
