I am using my position of Director of Ceremonies, in order to learn effective education techniques and teaching strategies when teaching about extremely important material that connects Alpha Phi history to our present sisterhood. This will help me accomplish the understanding of different learning styles to increase my knowledge for my future classroom. I was appointed to this position by my fellow sisters because they feel I hold Alpha Phi Ceremonies to a high standard and want new sisters to gain a love for the ceremonies and the organization as I have. In this position I will be in charge of teaching the new sisters ceremonies requirements and standards, songs, coordinating some chapter meetings, and coordinating multiple ceremonies, both formal and informal. Our formal ceremonies are where we are required to wear “ABAD” – all black all day – this symbolizes that a sister is attending one of the following ceremonies: Preference which is our recruitment ceremony, Inductions which is a pinning ceremony to enter them into our new member process, Court of Ivy which is our pre-initiation ceremony to invite them into their initiation, and Initiation which is the ceremony that official welcomes them into the Alpha Phi Fraternity. Our informal ceremonies were designed to help strengthen the sisterhood and bond between the past and the present sisters, some of these ceremonies are: Flower Ceremony where each sister brings a flower that they feel represents them and then we make a chapter bouquet, Founder’s Day ceremonies where we celebrate the 10 phenomenal women who started our organization in 1872, Senior Ceremony where we say goodbye to our graduating seniors and welcome them into their alumni period of Alpha Phi. For my project I will be focusing more on the informal ceremonies and Initiation because those are the ceremonies that allow me to teach new sisters about the importance of these ceremonies and what the organization can do for them in their time here at college.
