2024 season & news

Season overview

SYC entered 7 tournaments this season!

Our season kicked off with the return of SYC Shack! A fun weekend away featuring big group meals, quizzes, an S&C classroom session and workout, plenty of games in the pool, and a couple of training sessions!

This year we were part of the new European Ultimate Club Season (EUCS), where we finished 22nd (21st of teams eligible for EUCF qualification). Our first tournament was EUF Spring Tour. We had 3 wins and 3 losses and came away 7th (2nd in spirit) with some great foundations for the start of the season.

Our next tournament was Tom's Tourney in Bruges! SYC last attended Tom's in 2018 and we were so excited to return. After some tough match ups from all across Europe (first game against Germany Women!) we came away 14th (2nd in spirit) having also played plenty of bat-bat-hoop over the course of the weekend, honed our new chants for the season, and perfected our new bus celebration.

Windfarm was our next outing and it was amazing to see 17 UK women's teams entered! Despite a lightening storm threatening to end the tournament early, we came away 6th (6th in spirit). Our next trip was just down the road at London Invite, where we held seed finishing 7th.

UK Nationals in early July was up next. With some tight games including 2 universe losses, we finished 7th (3rd in spirit). We knew that our season wasn't over there, and we showed resilience and hard work til our next tournament 6 weeks later, where we also knew a wildcard spot for EUCF was up for grabs.

The mountains in Chambéry were the perfect backdrop for a stellar weekend at EUF Summer Tour. With 5 wins and 1 loss, we drew on points for top spot. It came down to a head-to-head and having lost 14-12 to our tied competitors (wuf. from Belgium) in our first game, our EUCF wildcard was not to be. We showed so much grit, trust and heart all weekend and came away 2nd overall and 1st in spirit.

A couple of weeks later, with a squad small in numbers but high in spirits, we again came 2nd (1st in spirit) at the UKU World's Watch Party.

Aside from the play this year, over £500 from the SYC Support Scheme was used to help players financially this season ensuring that players could participate fully in a season with SYC. Our socials this year ranged from a clothes swap to board-games, piano bar to CrossFit!

We are so proud of how we developed over the season and can't wait to keep building for next season. We know there's more to come and we can't wait.

TRIALS

We're kickstarting the 2024 season with our trials in December 2023 and January 2024!

You can find our trial form here and below -

Deadline for trial 1 sign up: 6th December 2023

Deadline for trial 2 sign up: 10th January 2024

The 2024 season will be captained by Emma Pickens and Jenny Fielder. The 2024 squad will have a competition squad of around 23 players and several training players who will be invited to all trainings and socials, but won't play at tournaments. We envisage training players to be players who cannot commit to the full season but will push the competition squad at trainings, alongside players that we would like to help develop.

Our primary season goal for 2024 is to qualify for Euros with the longer term aim of qualifying again for WUCC in 2026. We are looking for dedicated athletes who are willing to put the time and effort in to improve both on and off the pitch. In return we are committed to working with all SYC players to help them be the best they can be and provide them with a positive environment where they can flourish.

Our main trainings as a team will be held twice a month in London (4 hour weekend session on 3G) and we plan to attend one tournament per month from April to September. Competition squad members will be expected to have a high level of commitment to these main trainings and tournaments as well as work on their individual fitness and throwing outside of team sessions. We will also run midweek evening skills sessions weekly from April in central London. Our calendar will be shared with closed trialists so they can pre-assess whether it will be possible to commit to the team this season.

We are looking for hard-working players with the right mindset to improve, who would like to be part of a committed team who like to spend time together, both on and off pitch. If you are returning to Ultimate from a protracted break (i.e. through injury or pregnancy) please apply as we have previously had these players on our team and understand the need for flexibility.

We look forward to welcoming you at our trials!
