Twice a year, in spring and fall, we take youth fishing at Apple Canyon Lake in Illinois. This is a very educational and fun trip for the youth from local schools in the area. Many experience fishing for the first time and they literally become "hooked". If the fishing is a success, a fish fry is hosted by the schools. Regardless, hot dogs, chips, side dishes, etc. are always served along with refreshments.
On Wednesday, May 29, 2024,we will host the 7th and 8th Grade students from Benton, WI. We expect to have another fishing day this fall after school opens.
Volunteers are appreciated. Fishing begins at 9 a.m. and lasts until 12 p.m. with lunch following. Our Chapter traditionally provided the bait for this great event. This year (2024) through a very generous donation from a member the Chapter provided Mr. Droessler 30 brand new fishing Zebco fishing poles.
A big thank you to Gary Timmerman who has volunteered for this event for many many years.
Members of our chapter participate in Earth Day held in Blackhawk Memorial Park, Woodford, WI in April of each year. This is a great event where conservation clubs in southwest Wisconsin provide education for youth in the areas of fishing, hunting, trapping, archery, shooting, etc. Stations are set up during the day on a rotating basis for all positions where instructors educate and assist the kids in hands-on activities. This year's event takes place on Wednesday, April 27, 2022.
Three times a year, our Chapter does road clean-up from Benton, WI to Highway 80. We have been doing this very rewarding experience since 1991. Thank you to everyone who doesn't litter and keeps our roadsides looking good.
Our route begins on the west side of Benton, WI city limits on Hwy 11 to Guler's Corners, corner of Hwy 11 and Hwy 80. This year's 2022 dates are Saturday, April 30 at 8 a.m., Wednesday, July 20 at 5:30 p.m., and Saturday, September 17 at 8 a.m. We meet at the VFW parking lot (corner of main and Bean street) in Benton. Volunteers are needed.
Each year, the chapter purchases tree saplings of different varieties for distribution to anyone requesting them. There is no charge for the trees and the saplings are purchased thru Lafayette County Land Conservation. Distribution begins when saplings arrive in the spring. Contact Dale Brink at 608-574-6473. This service is fully funded by our Chapter.
Our IWLA logo is shown on two Call Of The Wild Trailers at the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel Sports Show held in Milwaukee early in March of 2020. They are owned by the Outdoor Heritage Education Center (OHEC) of Poynette, WI. Mark LaBarbera, a member of our local chapter and President of OHEC, was instrumental in getting our logo on the trailers as a result of a grant from Ike's National. . Benjamin Franklin made a special guest appearance. Also shown is a youth visitor receiving some education by a volunteer. (Photos courtesy of Mark LaBarbera).
Every Tuesday night starting at 5 p.m. during the summer, the Chapter hosts Open Trap Shooting to the public starting at 5 p.m. Adults pay $5.00 per round of 25 and Youth pay $4.00 per round of 25. The Chapter provides the clay pigeons. Participants bring their own shotgun and ammunition.
Hamburgers, brat patties, and refreshments are on hand for a very reasonable donation. You may find your favorite dessert that has been personally prepared and donated by members. Come one, come all, and enjoy a great evening of fellowship.
Last year, members tested local streams in the area for Oxygen, Clarity, Chloride, Phosphoros etc. If you would like take part in this year's 2022 testing, contact Dennis at 608-331-7491
