Swimmin’ holes in and around Winston-Salem and Forsyth County North Carolina
Remember the good old days of going to the local swimmin’ hole with friends to cool off and have fun in the water? Everyone who lived in a rural area had a swimmin’ hole where they used to go swimming whether it was in a pool, lake, pond, river, or stream; sometimes it was nothing more than a big hole with water in it.
During my childhood, the local swimmin’ hole was under the bridge over Frazier Creek on Beeson Dairy Road on the east side of Winston-Salem, NC near Walkertown. Heavy rains would flood the creek and wash out a large hole on the downstream side of the bridge. The hole would be so deep you could safely jump off the bridge into the water. At one point, the county added large rocks to the sides of the hole to stabilize the bridge but the pool was still deep in the center. Now, due to a new bridge, changes in the surrounding landscape, and reduced water flow in the creek, the swimmin’ hole no longer occurs.
This site provides information about some of the popular swimmin’ holes, lakes, and pools around Winston-Salem/Forsyth County, North Carolina during the 1950s, 60s, and 70s when the early baby boomers (1946-1954) were children, teens, and young adults. Some of the swimmin’ holes are still around while others are long gone, however, their memories are still with us.
