Benjamin M. Swarts, Ph.D.

Professor of Chemistry

Biography: Ben grew up in Danville, Ohio. He completed a B.A. in Chemistry from the College of Wooster in 2004 and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Wayne State University in 2010 with Zhongwu Guo. He studied as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley with Carolyn Bertozzi until 2013, after which he joined CMU. 

Selected honors and awards: Mid-American Conference (MAC) Outstanding Faculty Award (2023); CMU Student Mentorship Award (2023) NSF CAREER Award (2017); Henry Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award (2017); CMU CSE Award for Outstanding Research (2017); International Carbohydrate Organization Young Researcher Award (2016); CMU Provost's Award for Outstanding Research (2016); RCSA Cottrell College Science Award (2014).
