Undergraduate-focused education & outreach

Mid-Michigan region community college chemistry outreach program

We started this program in 2015 to provide opportunities for community college students who are interested in science to receive faculty mentoring and conduct summer research, with the ultimate goal of students transitioning to four-year institutions and a career in science. Click the link above for more information on the program and how to apply.

Science study abroad in South Africa

We started the CMU–Stellenbosch study abroad program in 2014 to provide a unique opportunity for CMU science majors to study abroad at Stellenbosch University, which is a top-tier teaching and research institution in South Africa. The program enables CMU students to continue their scientific coursework while having opportunities to participate in research or service learning activities. CMU sent its first students to Stellenbosch as part of this program in the spring of 2015. Click the link above for more information.

McNair Scholars program

We participate in the McNair Scholars program, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education and named in honor of Dr. Ronald E. McNair, who perished on the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1986. The program works with low income, first generation college students, and underrepresented students who want to obtain a Ph.D. Click the link above for more information.

ACS Project SEED program

We participate in the ACS Project SEED summer research program, which opens new doors for economically disadvantaged students to experience what it’s like to be a chemist. Students entering their junior or senior year in high school are given a chance to work alongside scientist-mentors on research projects in industrial, academic, and federal laboratories, discovering new career paths as they approach critical turning points in their lives.
