Undergraduate-focused education & outreach

Mid-Michigan region community college chemistry outreach program

We started this program in 2015 to provide opportunities for community college students who are interested in science to receive faculty mentoring and conduct summer research, with the ultimate goal of students transitioning to four-year institutions and a career in science.

Science study abroad in South Africa

We started the CMU–Stellenbosch study abroad program in 2014 to provide a unique opportunity for CMU science majors to study abroad at Stellenbosch University, which is a top-tier in South Africa. The program enables CMU students to continue their scientific coursework while having opportunities to participate in research or service learning activities. CMU sent its first students to Stellenbosch as part of this program in the spring of 2015.

McNair Scholars program

We participate in the McNair Scholars Program, which is a federally funded program through the U.S. Department of Education geared toward helping low-income, first-generation college students achieve their Ph.D.

ACS Project SEED program

We participate in the ACS Project SEED summer research program, which opens new doors for economically disadvantaged students to experience what it’s like to be a chemist. Students entering their junior or senior year in high school are given a chance to work alongside scientist-mentors on research projects in industrial, academic, and federal laboratories.
