With the spread of covid-19 pandemic, the executive committee of Sunway Chinese Cultural Society for the term 20/21 has successfully transformed the ways of activities to promote Chinese culture through organising different online activities. Those online activities include <Resonance> Live Show, SUCCS Virtual Camp <A Li’l Bit>, The SunVoice 5 and various online member's gatherings.
The <Resonance> Live Show is a brand new activity launched by SUCCS 20/21 term’s committees. The executive committees tend to interact with the members of Chinese Society Club through the live broadcast of online facebooks to share various knowledge about traditional Chinese Culture. Other than that, the live broadcast also added some interesting new things, such as sharing some inspiring stories and reading letter sessions. Additionally, online member gatherings are also organised every month as usual. Members are not only able to make new friends online, but also learn new knowledge of Chinese culture.
The SunVoice 5 "Apricus" singing competition was also held in a new online mode. The purpose of the activity is to let more people know about the charm of music and encourage those dream chasers to sing persistently to break out their own starlight path and shine brightly. This platform successfully brought together outstanding singers from various colleges and universities in Malaysia. Some singers’ resumes are active in the Malaysian music industry. In order to create more singers' exposure in the Malaysian music industry, from the audition to the finals, the judges and mentors employed are all well-known Malaysian musicians. SunVoice 5 is fortunate to cooperate with the famous Malaysian music creation company, Ko Music to provide singers’ lectures on the development of Malaysia’s music road, and also music performances in the final of SunVoice 5. In Sunvoice 5, we have added “Music Composing Competition” to discover more outstanding original creators. With that, our Sunvoic5 was awarded the “Best Event of the year Award” from Student Life.
Although this year were affected by the pandemic seriously, the 5th Sunway University Chinese Cultural Society’s executive committees were able to explore new and innovative online platforms to conduct different activities and share Chinese culture knowledge to their members. With the fearless spirit of the executive committee of Sunway Chinese Cultural Society for the term 20/21, it would be a good model to learn by the next generation and inherit Chinese Cultural knowledge with this spirit !
This year, SUCCS focuses on promotion of the core values of each activity and the information it brings out, hoping to deeply instill the meaning of cultural heritage in all participants.
In every member gathering, in addition to playing games together and creating a platform for communication using Chinese language, the nature of each member gathering is interspersed with some elements of Chinese culture. During the Mid-Autumn Festival, we paraded around the campus with lanterns, ate mooncakes and played games. Also, during the Winter solstice, we have made glutinous rice balls and lastly Chinese New Year gathering, we have exchanged Angpau. We hope that each activity could bring participants a deeper understanding of the profound wisdom and origin of Chinese culture.
The SunVoice 4 <Lucidus> aimed to listen to the melody which touches everyone's hearts. SunVoice 4 is fortunate to cooperate with the famous Malaysian music creation company, Jumuro Music to provide singers’ lectures on the development of Malaysia’s music road, and also music performances in the Final and “After Party” of SunVoice 4. This arrangement is to improve the quality of the SunVoice stage brand and to carry forward the melody from the heart.
Sunway University Chinese Cultural Night 2020 <Nascentia> would like to bring out the profound culture that implies the contribution of generations to cultural civilization. In order to present the original appearance of Chinese culture, we had visited the Malaysian Chinese Museum to understand the history of the Chinese in Malaysia. We used a series of cultural evening activities: exhibitions and stage plays to present the themes and stories of Malaysian Chinese culture, awakening everyone's cherishment of culture. However, while all organizing committees are working hard to plan and arrange the event, the Covid-19 epidemic has worsened in the local area, resulting in the cancellation of the Chinese Cultural Night 2020 which would have been held in April. Eventually, the event was ended with an online event which gathered all organizing committees, teacher advisors, stage play mentors, and performers in the exchange of experiences and created memories of each other.
On the other hand, the first ever events - Sunway Glory Cup organized by Chinese E-sports Club and Sunway National College Chinese Debate Competition organized by Chinese Debate Club are subsequently cancelled due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Although this year we have suffered from the impact of Covid-19 pandemic, the team seeks a model for stable development of the system, and then seeks breakthrough innovation. The business model of SUCCS today is shaped by the experience, contribution and hard work of each term of committees. This experience is also hoped to be passed on from generation to generation of SUCCS committees.
During the 5th iteration of SUCCS, although the pressure of previous success weighed heavy on the shoulders of the committee members, they continued to look forward in organizing each event, making it special and memorable for those organizing and for those who participated.
This iteration of SUCCS broke the stereotype of private universities, where we managed to fulfil and completely embody the last part of our slogan: “giving back to society”. We managed to tackle various social issues and spread awareness to the students in Sunway Universities.
In the 2018-2019 academic year, SUCCS held 3 instances of Member’s Orientation Day, indicating the large interest of the student body in our club. Various themes were used in organizing these orientations, like the mid-autumn festival, Chinese New Year and Chinese cosplay. Our mid-autumn gathering managed to attract close to 100 members to participate, where we played traditional games together, enjoyed festive treats and played with lanterns. Writing this, I’m sure all the members can remember the atmosphere we had during that night.
To improve our reputation and recognition amongst the students in Sunway University,we named our singing competition “SunVoice”and structured the competition around the theme “Metamorphosis”. This time, SUCCS invited various Chinese clubs from other colleges and universities to participate. Under the cooperation of the committee members, Sunway University’s Music Stream students and participants , we managed to create our own theme song and music video. We were also lucky enough to invite international and local artists, like Bii畢書盡 (Bi Shu Jin), Bell宇田 (Yu Tian), 林文蓀 (Lin Wen Suen) , 胡繢頤 (Wendy Woo Wei Yi) and 方X肆樂團 (FX4).
This year, the fourth iteration of SUCCN, 『弎簇』(Épanouir), we incorporated the 3 elements of love, friendship and family bonds. The performance was based on the script『奠』, written by a Taiwan author, Mr. 胡锦筵 (Hu Jin Yan). This was the first time we challenged the taboo by using a theme which incorporated “death”, where we had multiple exhibitions and also invited YB Teresa Kok Suh Sim, the Head of Ministry of Plantation Industries and Commodities and Mr. Ng Sze Han, the assemblymen of Selangor to be the VIP of this event.
Whilst each member of the SUCCS committee is small and minute, we proved that together, we are able to create our own path to pass down the Chinese Tradition by proving our value in this club. We managed to create a society that helped students to make a connection with the traditional Chinese culture through various events and performances, where the seeds of hard work from our seniors blossomed into the successful club you see today.
As time passes, SUCCS reached its peak where we became the main focus amongst the other clubs.
During the finals of the second iteration of SUCCS’ singing competition『音夢而聚』(Yin Meng Er Ju), the organising committee decided to incorporate a live orchestra as an accompaniment instead of background music to the finalists. Not only did this help enrich the experience of contestants, but also elevated the standard of the competition by improving the quality of each performance, through live music performances.
Continuing in 2017, SUCCS also held our third iteration of SUCCN, titled 『羨世』(Perso),which became a major success. The third iteration of SUCCN started with a campaign to introduce the night, which continued with cultural performances, costume plays and drama, along with various traditional performances to summarize and embody the vibe of 1970s in China, and carve a strong impression on the audience. During this night, the major breakthrough was where the members stepped up the standard of performances, where they incorporated more off-stage performances to involve the participation of the audience.
What was the blue wave that crashed down amongst the audience during that night of performances?
Was it the courage and diligence of the committee members, or the tears of enjoyment of the audience?
All in all, it was a given that this iteration of SUCCN was able to impress everyone that joined, and gave a new depth of performances for the future.
In 2017, SUCCS started to solidify the club’s tradition and culture for the future generation of members.
SUCCS organized our very own singing competition titled『因你而唱』(Yin Ni Er Chang),where we invited Chinese artist BELL 宇田 Yu Tian to become a guest performer. In addition, SUCCS also began making contacts with other societies from different schools and colleges, where we were the first club to do so in Sunway University.
Other than that, the second iteration of the Chinese Cultural Night, had a major breakthrough in improvement compared to the first. The SUCCN became the first performance to be held at Jeffrey Cheah hall for 1 and a half hours, which created a small moment of history in Sunway University.
These 2 major events created a name for SUCCS in Sunway University, which in turn solidified the status of the club amongst the other societies in the university, and pioneered the organization of large-scale events.
When the second generation of students joined, they created our slogan “To pass the torch of Chinese tradition to younger generations, whilst giving back to society”. This slogan embodies our objective and motive of creating this club. In every important event, every single member would not only inherit the slogan, but also carry the passion passed down by the senior members of the club.
In 2016, SUCCS organized our very own Chinese Cultural Night, titled ‘Memory’. Throughout the organization of this event, SUCCS members were able to step out of their comfort zone, developing and honing new soft skills to ensure that the event ran smoothly. Various traditional Chinese performances were held at the Jeffrey Cheah hall, like the 24 festive drums, Chinese diabolo and Sichuan Opera.
This is also the first time that SUCCS took the opportunity to perform and parade our club culture and tradition to the public eye.
The founder of SUCCS, an actuarial science professor, gathered a few of his students that loved traditional Chinese festivals, and started our very own club that we so dearly love today, SUCCS.
In the beginning, SUCCS was a very simple group for students to gather for festivals, and made the Mooncake festival the main festival gathering for seniors of that batch. They would taste the various kinds of tea, chat, play with lanterns and enjoy the mooncakes together under the round, full moon.
