Welcome to the Peachtree area of Cherokee County, N.C. – the westernmost county of North Carolina and the gateway to the Smoky Mountains, specifically in the Appalachian Mountains. Some would say we’re in the Blue Ridge Mountain range which includes the Smokies, but that Murphy is not technically inside the Smokies. Some spell it “the Smokey Mountains” but officially, it’s the “Great Smoky Mountains National Park”. We don’t really care, but on many mornings, just when you think the day will be a fog-in, you’ll often realize it is nature’s way of the sun heating moisture up out of the earth, rising into a fog, and then rising up higher through our elevation, on up into….clouds. Pilots call it “burning off the fog.”
Sunset Valley Overlook in Raccoon Ridge is located between Murphy, Hayesville, and Marble, North Carolina, just to the west of the Fires Creek Wildlife Management Area. While there is Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River casino with its restaurants and bowling alley for all ages, and the Western Carolina Regional Airport, you will still find this area is more family friendly and nicer for those looking for a more laid back vacation.
Our family traveled to the north Georgia / North Carolina area for many summers before finding a great house in Hayesville around 2020. We grew to love the area and found this newer home in 2023, with an even better view after many months of searching. It is extremely difficult to find this view on a paved road, with decent internet, not too far from restaurants and groceries!
