Sunnyside CSA is 100% volunteer run. Every member contributes by signing up for shifts during the season. Thanks for your commitment to keeping our community fed!
By signing your CSA contract, you agree to the following:
Each Summer Share household must complete a minimum of 4 hours (2 shifts)
Winter Share members must complete a minimum of 2 hour (1 shift)
Failure to complete your shifts can result in removal from the CSA.
You can also fulfill your requirement by contributing in other ways: grant writing, offering items for fundraisers, or joining the core group are just a few ideas. If you have other skills to share, please contact us — we're open to all suggestions!

We are working with new distributors this year - that means we are going to have to do a bit of troubleshooting for the first few weeks. We will update these instructions below once we have figured out the best processes. In the meantime, thank you for your patience.
If there is a major problem at any point during your shift, call the site coordinator — the number is at the top of every pickup list. Thank you for volunteering. We couldn't do it without you!
Heavy Physical Labor - The Prep Shift kicks off each pickup day. You'll pick up eggs from Connected Chef Hub and unload the delivery truck before distribution begins. Volunteers must be willing and able to lift vegetable boxes and pick up the eggs at Connected Chef. The site coordinator will text you beforehand — reach out with any questions.
Note: If there's a major problem at any point during your shift, call the site coordinator — (Shelley 916-718-1302) their number is at the top of the pickup list. If you can’t connect with Shelley you can also call Jiaxin 929-490-4614.
Note: There will be two volunteers working this shift - you are welcome to coordinate and divide the labor of this shift.
At 3:30pm, head to Connected Chef Hub (37-31 58th Street, Woodside) to pick up 21 dozen eggs and the invoice.
Deliver them to Sunnyside Community Services (43-31 39th St). Place them on the tables, or on a chair near the tables. (People sometimes take these thinking they are free!)
Ask the front desk or custodian (Jenkins) to let you down to the basement.
Retrieve the dolly, which will have empty veggie boxes from the prior week and the orange supply box. Use the elevator to bring the dolly up to the ground floor.
Space out the tables where the veggies will go (4 to 5 tables in a row for veggies, then 1-2 tables set up near volunteers seat for special shares). If tables are too wobbly there are cardboard supports you can use to stabilize them. Veggies of the same kind can be stored behind the table where the first box is laid out.

You’ll be using the delivery doors to the left of the pickup spot to receive the veggies from the driver.
When you see the delivery truck arrive, open the delivery doors and hold them in place using two hooks at the top of the doors.
Meet the delivery truck at the main entrance with the dolly.
Hand off the empty boxes to the driver.
Unload this week's vegetable boxes and bring them inside.
Collect the delivery invoice from the driver.
Don’t forget to close the delivery doors when dropoff is complete!
Leave the delivery invoices in the orange supply box.
Set the signs up for the veggies. Each type of vegetable should have a sign to label it with how much each member will take (ie: arugula 1 bunch, cilantro 1 bunch, carrots 1 bag, etc.). This information can be found on the weekly newsletter. Clip the sign to the corresponding vegetable box.

Minimal Physical Labor - This shift readies everything for pickup and helps members receive the correct shares. Pickup begins promptly at 5:00pm, so please arrive by 4:30 pm. The site coordinator will text you beforehand — reach out with any questions.
Note: If there's a major problem at any point during your shift, call the site coordinator — their number is at the top of the pickup list.
Unpacking the Orange Supply Box
Lay out pickup lists and pens
Set out the knife and cutting board
Create a “Swap Area” for people to place produce they are not interested in and pick up ones that they are.
Put the dolly against the wall for volunteers to place the empty veggie boxes on.
Counting Shares
The total number of shares that should be delivered each week is listed at the top of the pickup sheet. Be sure to count to make sure the number of shares delivered is equal to the number of shares required.
Special Shares
Special Shares (Tamales, Empanadas, and Cake) will be delivered for pickup once every month.
Count these shares to make sure the quantity of shares that we have ordered have been delivered.
Each special share will be labeled with each account’s primary member’s last name. Make sure they go to the right person.
Special shares should be attended by the volunteers - people sometimes take them when they haven’t ordered them.
Distribution
At 5:00pm, begin distribution - if all the shares have already arrived before this time, you may start earlier.
As members arrive, check them off the list and make sure they're picking up the right share(s). Members should give you their name — if they're picking up on behalf of an account, have them give the primary member's last name.
Keeping it Clean
Keep empty veggie boxes folded neatly on the dolly.
Clean the floor and table surfaces throughout the shift.
Handing off to the next shift: At 6:15pm, note any updates at the bottom of the pickup list and brief the Late Distribution volunteers before you go.
Example of what distribution start looks like
Light Physical Labor - The final shift covers the end of pickup, cleanup, and returning everything to storage. The site coordinator will text you beforehand — reach out with any questions.
Note: If there's a major problem at any point during your shift, call the site coordinator — their number is at the top of the pickup list.
Arrival & Handoff
Arrive at 6:15pm to relieve the Early Distribution volunteers. Get any updates from them.

Wrapping Up
At 7:00pm, begin calling members who haven't yet picked up their share. Their contact info is on the pickup list.
At 7:30pm, begin cleanup: sweep the floors, wipe down the tables, fold and stack empty boxes, and break down any remaining bins.
Clean the knife and cutting board and return them to the CSA tote.
Closing
At 8:00pm, note any unclaimed shares at the bottom of the pickup list. Leave unclaimed boxes near the double doors by the service entrance for SCS staff.
Return all materials (accordion folder, CSA tote, boxes, orange supply box) to the basement via the elevator.
Ask a maintenance worker from the community center to take you down.
