Where in the World Is ...

Destination Imagination - East

Hello families,

We have made it to week five! It’s been extremely hard to keep up with the days when we are having so much fun at camp!

This week, the children were super engaged in making yarn brackets, necklaces, and key chains for their backpacks and hair decorations! We had mini designs workshop where the teachers taught the students how to braid, twist, and make other designs.

In addition to all the yarn fun, we also made magical wind chimes using beads! The children were excited to work on these so they can hang them up somewhere at home.

As we gear up for our last week, we will continue to dive into our imagination and have a lot of fun while doing so!

For this week’s activities, students were presented with different forms of art and were inspired to produce pieces using new and creative methods.

To start off our week, students were introduced to pointillism art and were given a demonstration on how to create depth in a painting with shadows and highlights through a different mode of painting. They were each handed a sheet of paper and were instructed to sketch an object or a scene. Each student received a paint palette and used q-tips as a tool to paint dots on their sketch.

For our second project, students were inspired to produce a folded paper relief sculpture. They were shown a demonstration of three different simple origami folds they could use in their piece. Each student was provided with a variety of colorful square sheets which they would fold and glue together to create a unique paper sculpture.

Just Do It! - East

Hi everyone! For week five of Just Do it, we got to play around a little with the theme of the week, ‘Where in the World Is?’.

All of the campers got to participate in the same games this week! We got to do a little bit of relaxing with some Cosmic Yoga. We laid out our gym mats and even got to take our shoes off (Don’t worry it wasn’t TOO stinky)!

They kiddos also got to play a game we called Dragon Tails, where the students attach a dragon tail to their clothes and run away from the humans who try to steal their tails. We played three rounds of this and that still wasn’t enough! We surprisingly passed up some free time to continue this entertaining game!

We are bitter sweet with what fun the last week of camp will bring.

Welcome back to Just Do It for our second to last week!

We kicked off the week in the gym with a new game, SPUD! Similar to the basketball game of “HORSE,” once players got all 4 letters of SPUD they were out. To get back in, a task was completed: tasks included cartwheels, star jumps, and even singing the national anthem in a British accent.

Wednesday was all about handball, four square, and tail tag! We closed the week with the help of a few of our LITs. Groups played GaGa Ball in a homemade GaGa ball pit.

With such a great close to the week, we can’t wait to see what the last week of Just Do It will bring!

STEAM - East

Hi everyone!

Week 5 is coming to an end and we have had so much fun this week.

At the beginning of the week we learned about dragons and made our own paper plate dragon puppets using water colors. This was a fun activity for all of our students! We also learned about wind and how things glide. We made hoop gliders with straws, cardstock paper and tape. Then the most fun part was going outside to the soccer field and testing our gliders with the wind!

The last thing we did was learn about rain and rain clouds and we made our own rain cloud experiment with shaving cream, water, and food coloring.

We have had a wonderful summer and I can’t believe we have one more week left.

We’re almost to the end of such a fun summer!

Steam has had a busy week, Monday we finished our planters and each student got to plant either a spider plant or pothos to take home for themselves!

Wednesday we got to learn about matter, we made our own oobleck, which is both solid and liquid. It was just cornstarch and water but it was a lot of fun!

Friday we made bird houses with recycled materials sun butter and bird seed!

Excited for the last week and activities to come!

Hollywood - East

We are glowing, folks!

This is the fifth week and the students have worked so hard on their dances, puppet shows, singing, plays and of course their amazing fashion. This week’s theme is “Where in the World is?” so get ready to pull out your geography skills!

This week, the kids made sure that they had every part of their play ready to show off on stage. The kids made sure that their costumes and outfits were fashion forward enough to show on the red carpet. They had to make sure that all the parts of their songs and dances were down so they could remember it for when the time comes to show it off to all the people in the audience. The puppets that the kids made are magical and ready for their appearances in the weekly showing of The W Show.

A special choreographed dance by Ms. Gina Miranda will be performed by group 6. This is a dance that was performed by the site coordinators back in Summer 2019!

We hope you enjoy this week’s show!

This week, our penultimate show features a skit, dancing, games and handmade costumes galore!

We went out of this world to tell a story about the first cat in outer space who meets an unlikely friend. We will also meet a friendly alien from unknown origins in an improv skit.

A few of our groups drew inspiration from our favorite game shows and will be facing off against staff in Family Feud and Minute to Win It challenges, played in front of a live audience!

LITs - Healey

Hello everyone,

It's the LIT crew coming to you live from the Healey summer camp! Let's just start off by saying thank you to everyone who participated in our lemonade sale and our corner store. Every dollar that was spent went towards our field trip to Boda Borg in Malden. It was an amazing field trip and one to remember forever. We took the train and bus and some of us never had the opportunity to ride one of those. We got to experience walking around the community and to enjoy the lovely Giraffe in Assembly Square. I promise you that giraffe was close to eating our faces off. This week we also got to invite some members from BAM (Becoming A Man) to help us with our Staff vs. LIT game. One more week until our crew has to disperse and re-unite again next year. until next time! LIT saying goodbye this week and on to the next one. over and out!

Social Stories for Kids

What is a social story?

A social story is a simple story that describes a social situation and the appropriate way to act in that situation.

Social stories is a great way to teach children a variety of skills and behaviors , as well as outline social situations. We read some great social stories this week, the children had a great time sharing ways of behaving in different situations from the social story. Some of the social stories we read were, When I keep my hands to myself, Some parts are not for sharing and I can listen. We had a great chat discussing behaviors, feeling and challenging situations. The children had great insights and reinforce skills examples. Looking forward to last week's chat!

Week 5 was an exciting week for our campers!

After our last week of learning the magic of yet, this week we focused on how our thoughts and feelings could feel stuck and how we need to look at things from a different perspective.

We read a story about Pete the Cat and his Magic Sunglasses and how he learned to take time to change the way he looked at things so he could cope well and solve his problems. We then made our own magic sunglasses to remind us to recognize our feelings, think about them in a different way, and then come up with solutions.

It was great for the kiddos to see how having a growth mindset can change our outlook on everything in positive and magical ways!

I hope you can practice their new and growing mindset with them at home, too!

Have a kind weekend everyone!
