Early on in the course, we talked about digital citizenship in schools as well as the new cell phone ban. There were mixed thoughts about the ban and whether or not it was needed. I have expressed my thoughts about the need for students to engage in online platforms and take advantage of multimodal tools for learning. However, we also looked at some very important facts about the overuse of technology and social media.
We need to consider how technology impacts our students in both positive and negative ways. In today's digital world, information is shared and received in an instant. How are we providing guidance for our youth? How do we teach students to stop and reflect before sharing online?
Listen to my thoughts on screentime, balance, and the cell phone ban.
There are many benefits to online, social learning and as teachers, we are in a position to show students the educational value of being digital learners.
One of my classmates shared this fantastic online writing site that encourages students to write, share their learning AND evaluate success criteria in an engaging and motivating way. Students are prompted to write something, share it, and then gain real-time feedback from their peers. This is an example of how technology can redefine the learning.
Having explore the benefits of social networking, we also discussed social activism - what it is and what it is not!
Another classmate shared this lesson about the difference between social activism and slacktivism. In this digital, connected era, it is easy to think that we are making a change, when really, all we are doing is participating in a trend or updating our profile picture, while not taking action at all.
Consider how we and our students can use social media to create change!
