Are you interested in ‘hands-on’ archaeology …
… If so, perhaps we can help!
The Suffolk Archaeological Field Group exists to help people with an active interest in archaeology take part in field projects. We host a wide array of archaeological activities across Suffolk that you can take part in, such as:
Geophysical surveying (Magnetometry and Resistivity)
Never done this before? Don't worry we've got you covered!
Come along to one of our working sessions to see what happens. We are happy to help get you ready to make new discoveries - full training in these archaeological activities can be given if required.
Our members have a wide range of archaeological experience and training, which they are happy to share with new members on the variety of projects we are running across the county. The Field Group also receives training and advice from Suffolk County Council’s Archaeological Service. Interested? Why not join our group.
… or think you may have a site of archaeological interest?
The Field Group is always looking for new sites and is very happy to hear from landowners who believe they have features of archaeological or historical interest on their land, and are interested in finding out more. The Field Group does not charge landowners and can provide a range of non-intrusive surveys, together with limited-scale excavations. The Field Group is insured, and will only carry out work as agreed with you, the landowner. You will remain in control of access and the extent of work at all times.
The Field Group can advise on how to contact the Portable Antiquities Scheme and the Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service for further support, if required. The Field Group does not, however, carry out work to satisfy local authority planning and development requirements. Want to find out more?
