Back in 2019 Ralph Fiennes was researching his role as Basil Brown in the Netflix movie 'The Dig' for which he was BAFTA nominated.  He contacted Suffolk County Council Archaeology Service to find out if they knew anyone he could meet who knew Basil Brown and about getting some experience on a archaeological dig.  

Luckily, Faye Minter the County Archaeologist knew the Field Group could help on both counts as one of our founding members - Gilbert Burroughs knew and dug with Basil Brown in the 1970's and we were digging in Cookley at the time.

So Ralph Fiennes came out and joined us for the day on the dig, to get a far more authentic experience of an archeaological dig for his role than he would have visiting a modern commercial dig with its hard hats and hi-vis jackets.
