Set Expectations. Sit down with your student and go through their courses. Students should:
work on 3-6 courses at a time
spend about 4-6 hours a day in their classes
complete 3-5 assignments a week (depending on the grade level and the specific course) and 12-20 assignments per month
Set a timeline
When should they be done with their classes?
Check-in weekly with their progress. Where should they be? Where are they at?
If they are doing well you can adjust your check-ins to bi-weekly.
If they are not doing well adjust it to daily check-ins.
Consistently review the expectations you set with your student about their courses
Discuss with your student what works best for their learning style and reinforce expectations:
What resources may be needed to help them in their school work like reaching out to their instructors, a tutor, or Math help?
What time is day do they prefer to learn?
Where is the best place for them to set up a study area in your home?
By designating a specific spot in your home for students learning, students can separate their school and home lives. Here are some of the best places to set up a learning space:
Extra room
Kitchen
Dining room
In a room with you
It is usually best to have a student learn somewhere besides their bedroom because there are fewer distractions while the student works.
Creating a schedule
Work at least 4-6 hours a day (We recommend Monday-Friday)
Have 15 -20 minute breaks to get up and stretch to stay motivated
Use an electronic calendar
