Literary texts include poetry, fiction, literary nonfiction, and drama. Drama has never been on a released STAAR test before, but there is a strong possibility that the TEA will add it.
The PDF to the right has every piece of fiction that has ever appeared on the STAAR test. As you can see, there are some things that pop up frequently. Inferences, theme, textual evidence, tone, point of view, and figurative language get asked about pretty often.
Use the buttons below to access specific resources (videos and notes) for each of these skills/concepts. The videos under strategies and processes are also highly recommended for the fiction texts found in the STAAR test.
Below are some links, PDFs, and videos that can help you prepare for the literary portion of the STAAR test.
Many students struggle with poetry. All of the figurative language can feel overwhelming and confusing. The PDF to the left contains all of the pieces of poetry that have appeared on the STAAR test. It is not always tested, but it definitely could be tested this year!
We've practiced using TPCASTT in class, but some students feel like it is too much to remember. Press the button below for poetry tips and tricks.
Literary nonfiction hasn't been on the recent STAAR tests, so I would probably think it would pop up again soon!
Questions associated with the genre ask about the following:
Author's purpose - why did the author include this? Why did the author do this?
Metaphors
Descriptive language - when there is detail and imagery that helps you imagine something
Tone
Theme
Inferences
Supporting evidence
All of these skills have been covered in fiction and in poetry. I would suggest reviewing these terms to prepare for this genre. You can also take a look at these texts and questions to get a feel for them.
Drama has never appeared on the STAAR test. After a year like this though, who knows what will happen! It wouldn't hurt to review some drama terms. Use the videos below to refresh yourself.
