The reading section has three main categories. Those categories have subcategories within them! Let's look at the genres that are tested in the reading section.
Literary (13 questions)
Poetry
Fiction
Literary Nonfiction
Drama (has not been tested before, but definitely could be tested this year!)
Informational (13 questions)
Persuasive
Informational
Expository
Across Genre (8 questions)
This is when they put two stories together and ask you questions about both texts.
When you see questions throughout the test that ask for what a word means, that is also across genre!
There will not be a separate page for across genre because it deals with both literary and informational. I will provide a PDF of what across genre questions have looked like in the past below.
There are a number of things you can do to prepare! We can look at test taking strategies (look under testing tips), strategies for reading comprehension, and specific vocabulary for these genres. The best way, however, is to read. Your brain is a muscle. In order to improve in sports, you have to practice and work out. In order to improve in reading, you must practice and work your brain out! Reading daily will make it easier for you to remember what you have read and will also help you read for longer periods of time without getting tired. I promise you I am not just telling you to read because I am an English teacher... it is seriously the best way to prepare for a reading test.
Take a look at this PDF. I went through 2013-2019 released STAAR tests and gathered all of the questions that are considered "across genre". You can look through this to get a feel for what these questions look like.
