Civil War Era Letter Transcription

For this volunteer project, I was assigned to transcribe a collection of civil war era letters for the digital collection of the local history department at New Hanover County Public Library. These letters were written by an officer in the confederate army who was stationed at Ft. Fisher during the two battles there. I was assigned to this project to make these letters more easily accessible to a wider audience, and the local history librarian said that views of the collection spiked after the transcriptions were added. For each letter I transcribed it to the best of my ability and then added the transcription to the metadata for the item. Included are screenshots of some of the more interesting letters and their transcriptions, as well as a screenshot of the front page of the collection which credits people who worked on the transcriptions.

Digital Archiving of Film-industry Related Photos

This project was also done for the digital collection of the local history department at New Hanover County Public Library. For this project I was assigned to help out with scanning and editing photos, then adding metadata to the item in the digital collection. This area has a movie studio and has had a thriving film industry which many are interested in, and local universities use the items in this collection in teaching their film programs. Included are screenshots of some of the photos I added and their accompanying metadata. Adding metadata sometimes required doing research into who the people in the photos were and what the title of the film was when released, as the photos were often filed with the working title of the movie since they were taken during production.
