Not at all! We are very proud of our open chorus policy, which means we do not audition anyone to be part of the ensemble/chorus. We welcome everyone—whether you're a seasoned performer or just starting out.
For roles on our production team, we sometimes require a baseline level of experience to get you started. However, we also offer associate and shadowing positions for those looking to train and up-skill in a specific theatrical discipline.
If you're not a performer, there are loads of other ways to get involved In production – backstage, lighting/sound, set, costumes, props, stage management, orchestra, front of house, and more! See out SPARK framework for more Info!
We typically rehearse twice a week in the evenings, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Mondays are dedicated to full company rehearsals, where everyone comes together to work on group numbers, blocking, and ensemble scenes. Tuesdays are usually set aside for more focused sessions with soloists, small groups, or specific scenes that need extra attention.
As we get closer to show week, Tuesdays may also become full company rehearsals, depending on how the production is progressing and what still needs polishing.
In addition to rehearsals, we aim to run a mix of workshops and socials throughout the semester. These give everyone the chance to build skills, bond as a group, and take a break from the rehearsal room while still having loads of fun.
Absolutely – we’re flexible and supportive. University always comes first, and how much you commit to SMTS is completely up to you. Some roles, especially principal parts, can be a bigger time commitment, but there are plenty of other ways to get involved that are less demanding.
We encourage all members to think about how much time they can realistically give, and to find a role within the society that suits their schedule. Whether you want to be centre stage, help behind the scenes, or just join in the fun when you can – there’s a place for you. Our committee and production team are great at helping people find where they fit best.
University can feel like a big leap – but joining SMTS might just be the best decision you make this year. It’s more than a society – it’s a community, a creative outlet, and a whole lot of fun.
We can’t wait to meet you – come along, get involved, and let’s make magic happen on (and off) the stage.
Break a leg,
SMTS
