Art Car

In 2011, I had the opportunity to do a makeover on one of Burning Man's most iconic art cars, Irreducible. Above are the before and after photos (after photo credit Brad Templeton). The Department of Mutant Vehicles had been raising their standards for appearance, and too much of the golf cart infrastructure of Irreducible was showing up. I was given full creative control to modify the vehicle, with the request that the mods be true to the spirit of Irreducible.

The TechShop Shopbot was the perfect tool for creating smooth flowing line cuts in plywood. I sketched out the structures, digitized the sketches, and cut them out on the 'bot, as seen above. Below they are lined up along the fence after being painted. In addition to the roof arches and ribs, we made wheel covers for the back wheels.

Further mods included covering the golf cart dash and visible seat support with fabric, and creating a new bench seat to replace the bucket seats.
