By graphing student performance educators can judge the intervention's effectiveness, using Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM).
The process of tracking, monitoring, and documenting the student's performance and instruction in a Multi-Tier Approach, RTII.
Is the student responding to the intervention?
Are their signs of academic & social-emotional growth?
Does the instruction need adjusting or modifying?
Main Goal: A screening is done for all of the students to determine who is at risk for not meeting grade level standards.
Identify student performance in and benchmarks:
Give Curriculum-Based Measurement (CBM) Tests of skills in the annual curriculum.
Use Universal Screenings; DIBELS, STAR Reading.
Utilize alternate forms with different items when using annual curriculum for testing; same content but presented differently.
Test three times a year.
Use continuous assessments of instruction (formal/ informal/summative).
Plot student effort using graphs to determine progress, with student.
Set realistic achievement goals that can be measured with students.
Frequent monitoring at least once a week for a period of 6-10 weeks.
NOTE: All students, in all tiers, receive high-quality instruction, however identified struggling students receive frequent monitoring of their performance.
Main Goal: Intervention is successful for student learning at an appropriate rate to meet grade level standards.
Create new plots for tier 2, using graph from tier 1.
Allows personnel to quickly compare progress made during different tiers.
Vertical, line, or bar graphs will work best. (example below)
Chart & examine performance level and rate of growth regularly on graph.
Daily use of assessments.
Monitor daily or biweekly for 10 weeks, using literacy screenings.
Stop tier 2 intervention if:
student performance level meets or exceeds benchmark AND
student graph slope meets or exceeds established rate of growth.
Create realistic & measurable goals with students.
Proceed to tier 3 if student the performance level and rate of growth are less than the specified criteria.
Main Goal: Student is learning at an appropriate rate and meeting individualized goals to meet grade level standards.
Intensive, individualized instruction based on student's specific needs.
1:1 to 1:3 teacher/student ratio.
Evaluate to identify any disabilities.
Special Education Services Consultation.
IEP team is formed.
Individualized Education Program (IEP) plan is established.
Implement Special Education Program recommendations.
Create new plots on existing graph to document student performance and rate of growth.
Continue to collect CBM and monitoring data to guide instruction.
Develop individual, measurable learning targets with student.
Track student progress toward meeting individualized goals.
Daily in-class assessments.
Monitor daily or weekly, using literacy screenings.
This graph shows LaToya’s Tier 1 and Tier 2 data.
The dotted vertical line indicates when Tier 2 intervention begins.
It is common practice to draw a dotted vertical line on a graph to indicate the point at which instruction or intervention changes.
