History of SLFSC

The St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club YouTube channel highlights the History of the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club from 1953-2003.

The SLFSC has been in operation in Canton, New York for over 60 years! From a relatively modest beginning, we have grown into a club with over 150 members. We have many skaters who have earned gold medals in the U.S Figure Skating categories of dance, freestyle and moves. Some of our skaters have gone on to skate professionally for shows such as Disney on Ice! We are proud of our long heritage of providing fun and instruction for our skaters.

2012 was a very special year for the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club because it marked our 60th anniversary of figure skating in Canton. Shortly after Appleton Arena was completed, in 1950, ice time was provided to the pioneers of what was to become the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club. The first official board meeting was held on January 20, 1952. In January 1953, word came from the U.S Figure Skating Association that the SLFSC had been admitted as a member club. This made the club the only official figure skating club in the St. Lawrence Valley. Lake Placid was the nearest club to the east and the Clinton and Syracuse Clubs were the nearest to the south. To the north, in Canada, Kingston, Brockville, Ottawa, and Montreal were the closest neighbors.

The first ice show of the SLFSC, as an official member of U.S Figure Skating (known then as the USFSA), was held on February 27, 1953. Over the years, thousands of area youth and adults have skated as members in the club. In fact, many people who skated with the club when they were younger now have children, and grandchildren, skating with us today.
