Clarence "Bud" Randall

2019 Inductee

Bud Randall‘s association with the St. Lawrence Figure Skating Club began in the early 1970’s as a parent and a Board member whose term lasted for about 12 years. At that time Appleton Arena did not have ice in the summer months and the skaters had to travel to Lake Placid or Brockville to skate. In his position as Vice President of Business Affairs at St. Lawrence University he prepared a proposal on the cost to keep the ice open at Appleton during the summer. The Club was interested in renting ice time and the University Hockey coach was interested in the possibility of having a summer youth Hockey program available for the community. Bud presented his proposal to the University Trustees at their Board meeting and after the meeting, Mr. Appleton (Appleton Arena family) made out a check for the cost, gave it to Dr. Piskor, the President at the time and said “Get it Done.” A tremendous gift to the community made possible through the vision of Bud Randall.

Bud’s involvement didn’t stop there. He worked with Bob Crowley, a student at St. Lawrence and professional figure skater, who said he would stay for the summer and manage the program for figure skaters including USFSA testing. Bud took on the responsibility for contacting judges to come to Canton for test sessions. All USFSA judges are volunteers and he made sure they were well treated so they would want to come back. He also did the announcing for test sessions and ice shows.
