This research paper should be a "carefully planned essay that shares information or proves a point". (1) Information might be about concepts or ideas a student is familiar and wants to explore more in-depth or an idea from a book, a website, documents, interviews, observations or such that he/she wants to know more about. (2)
Papers are usually 5-8 double spaced including a title page and a works cite page. Length depends on how much is needed to cover the topic. Starts with introduction (thesis statement), body, ends with conclusion. In the works cited page students only need to cite references used in the paper. This is not a bibliography which would include all the resources used.
Two categories: Analyze ore Explain or Argue or Persuade. Do you want to explain Black Holes or argue that playing video games can damage your eyes. Ask the who, what, when, where, why, how questions.
How to write a good thesis statement? First choose a topic you are interested. Be specific then focus on the particular by narrowing down your subject. (Five Topics of Intervention: Definition, Comparison, Relations, Circumstance, Authority) Write a clear concise direct sentence or two. Be sure what you focus on is supported with proven facts and convincing details. Double check to make sure it meets the requirements of the rubric.
Your body of the paper should have a beginning, middle and an end or be categorical (characteristics of light).
