WHAT IS A MILLWRIGHT?
A millwright is an expert craftsman who installs, dismantles, maintains, repairs, and moves machinery usually, in an industrial setting.
The millwright is responsible for reading schematics, drawings, or service manuals to determine proper work procedures for the installation process as well as producing preventative maintenance plans for the equipment. They utilize heavy-rigging for moving the machinery into place and helping to make sure that it is aligned within the proper specifications.
In addition to these, the millwright will also perform duties as a carpenter, pipefitter, and electrician. They must be able to navigate software programs as equipment continues to become more advanced.
Before the installation process, the millwright is responsible for setting the benchmarks for specific tolerances to make sure the machine operates optimally. Throughout the installation process, the millwright adheres to the benchmarks to level and align the equipment, as well as the gearboxes, motors, and couplings, to ensure the machinery is operating within specified tolerances.
Working within these tolerances improves the final product as it comes off the machine. If the tolerances are maintained to the thousandth of an inch as STEVENS manages, the dimensional tolerances on the final product will be on spec every time.
