What Types of Equipment Are Used In Civil Construction? Part 2

Not too long ago, we posted an article detailing some of the equipment used in civil construction.

Now we're back with another post to expand that list.

There are hundreds of tools and pieces of equipment used by civil engineers, and there are always new developments happening in this field.

Civil engineers rely on several types of equipment to get the job done.

This can include heavy equipment, earth-moving equipment, survey equipment, and much more.

These pieces of equipment all make their jobs easier, and much more efficient.

Without these tools, the job of a civil engineer would be next to impossible to accomplish.

In the article below, we will look at more types of equipment used in today's civil construction projects.

COMPACTORS

Compactors, sometimes called rollers, are used to compact construction materials or the ground.

Different types of compactors will be available for different compacting purposes.

For example, smooth wheel rollers are used to compact shallow layers of soil or asphalt.

Sheep-foot rollers are used for deep compaction jobs.

And pneumatic tired rollers are used for compacting fine-grained soils and layers of asphalt.

TIPPER

A tipper is a trucker where the rear platform or bed can be raised at the front to allow the load to be dumped by gravity.

Sometimes called a tip truck, tippers are used for rough and tumble mining and quarrying operations and to carry bulk loads in construction and infrastructure projects.

Tippers have complete maneuverability, high performance, and long-term endurance, resulting in lower operational costs.

CRANES

A crane is a handy machine in civil engineering.

A crane is composed of pulleys and cables that allow them to lower and lift loads well beyond the capabilities of humans.

Cranes not only help with lowering and lifting loads, but they can also move loads horizontally.

Many civil engineering companies use cranes at construction sites to help them move heavy materials that their workers can't move under their own power.

Cranes can be a static or mobile machine.

A mobile crane will have large wheels to provide stability and support to the crane when it's hoisted in the air carrying a heavy load.

A static crane, or tower cranes, is typically used to construct skyscrapers and other tall buildings.

TELEHANDLERS

Telehandlers are hoisting equipment are used to lift heavy materials to heights or provide a construction platform to construction workers at great heights.

They contain a long, telescopic boom that can be lowered or forwarded.

Different types of equipment, like a bucket, cabins, forklifts, lifting jibs, and more can be attached to the end of the telescopic boom based on what's needed for the job.

HOIST

A hoist is a very useful piece of construction equipment.

It's a device used to raise or lower a load using a drum or wheel lift that uses a rope or chain.

A hoist can be operated by hand, or it can be driven electrically or pneumatically, and the chain or rope is used as a lifting device.

A hoist can also be used as a man-lift, buck-hoist, lift, or elevator, and they are often used in large construction projects to build large buildings like hospitals.

Other industries use hoists for full-time operations for things like transferring material, and equipment between the ground and the upper floor.

CONVEYORS

Conveyors are machines used to move materials from one location to another.

They can be used to move materials of any size, shape, or weight.

Conveyor systems are used in several industries, including pharmaceutical, food processing, print finishing, agriculture, automotive, mining, electronics, aerospace, bottling and canning, and packaging.

We include conveyors in our list because sometimes the shaft of the conveyor is supported by wheels which allow the movement of the shaft around a construction site.

Wheeled conveyors can be used at construction sites to move bulky stones and bricks from one point to the other.

DUMP TRUCKS

A dump truck is a heavy machine used in construction sites to carry materials in large quantities from one site to another, or to a dump yard.

In big construction sites, off-road dump trucks are typically used.

Off-road dump trucks contain large wheels with a tremendous amount of space for materials that allow them to carry huge quantities of material in any ground condition.

TANKERS

A tanker, or tank truck, is a motor vehicle used to carry liquefied loads, dry bulk cargo, or gases on roads.

The largest tankers are very similar to railroad tankers that are also used to carry liquefied loads.

There are many different variants of tankers due to the wide variety of liquids that need to be transported by construction companies.

One of the common uses of a tank truck in civil engineering is for carrying mixed concrete.

CRAWLER DOZERS

A crawler dozer is a very powerful construction vehicle. A crawler dozer is a tracked vehicle with excellent stability.

They can have various blades mounted on their front that help move material.

They are frequently used in pioneer work, like in road constructions or to remove overburden during mining.

Small crawler dozers can be used as grading tractors or automated grade controls to establish complex contours.
