Coping Strategies

What to do when things are going to shit!

Ultras are tough! In every ultra you will likely have low points. There are many coping strategies, sometimes even solutions that you can use. Here are a few that I use:

  • Chafing (ow, Ow, OW!)
    • try wearing tights or compression shorts
    • try vaseline or anti chafing products on thighs, under arms, on junk (guy), butt crack
    • wear a pack that fits well (no pressure points)
  • Overheating
    • Drink water or ice water
    • Pour water on head
    • Wear a hat and put ice in hat
    • Slow down pace
  • Muscle cramps
    • Magnesium capsules
    • Electrolytes
    • Pickle juice - swish in mouth!
    • Eat sugar
    • Slow pace
    • If calves are shoes tied too tight?
  • Blackened toe nails
    • Right sized shoes
    • Shoes with a large toe box
    • Tie shoes tight enough
