Let's Go Save Water

Scope of work: original music and lyrics, sound design, recording of vocals, final mix

Format: promotional music video, online release

Client: Omen Studios for Public Utilities Board's Water Conservation Awareness Programme

Creative notes

Omen Studio’s concept of superheroes assisting in the water-conservation efforts by defeating the water-wasting monsters inspired the tag-line of the song “Let’s go save water”, in which “save water” not only refers to the conservation of water, but as to rescue if seen in the context of the heroes. Inspiration for the tune came from sci-fi action thrillers; coupled with a strong, throbbing electronic beat.

The song begins serenely, evoking morning mood, as it gradually eases the children into action. A beat is introduced at the first chorus to lift the mood. The hook in this song is “3… 2… 1…” which we have enlivened by having the numbers shout out by a chorus.

This song is spirited and lively, with a stronger beat; a notch above the warm-up. The hooks in the chorus are the calls to action: “[action] it”, delivered as spontaneous hollers (as opposed to being sung strictly). We employed variations in the rhythmic groove to create interest and avoid monotony.

  • Lyrics: Vanessa Phang

This song is livelier still, much more fast-paced; another notch above “Super Kids Love to Move All Day”. The motif in the chorus is based off the letters that make up the word “active”.

As a cool-down song, it was given a calming feel.

For this Fun Dance, we were commissioned to create five tracks which, collectively, would form a series of simple workouts for pre-schoolers, beginning with a warm-up, and ending with a cool-down. The lyrics contain key messages about healthy practices, such as maintaining an active lifestyle and

We are featuring four out of five tracks; the fifth is an adaptation from the tune “This is the Way” with the addition of original lyrics; while the rest are original compositions.

Order of tracks

  1. Warm Up, Super Kids

  2. Super Kids Love to Move All Day

  3. Sit Less, Move More, Super Kids

  4. Cool Down, Super Kids

To quote the words of Walt Disney: “I didn't treat my youngsters like frail flowers”, this has been our guiding principle whenever we create music for young listeners. The tunes, lyrics and arrangements are catchy, but never over-simplistic.

UOB Corporate Cardmember Awards Performance

Scope of work: co-music arrangement, co-music direction

Format: opening item for an awards ceremony

Client: Lumina for United Overseas Bank Corporation

Location: Capitol Theatre

Creative Notes

As an opening item for a corporate awards ceremony, the client had asked for a performance of UOB's corporate anthem that would be played by ten instruments of varying ethnic backgrounds. Jonathan Lim created the backing arrangement, whilst August Lum devised and led the creation of the parts for each instrument. Not all parts were written; certain instruments sounded better when their performers were left to display their expertise, creating authentic musical figures and sounds that mastery of these instruments could only bring forth.

Silent Affection

Scope of work: original song, original score, sound design, final mix in stereo

Format: short film

Client: 7-Bells Productions for Aggregate Asset Management

Creative notes

The material for the music is developed from the song featured at the end of the film.

This song is an original piece that I composed.

The score is largely piano-driven - the piano is the instrument that the father plays - with the accompaniment of strings.

The fight scene underscores the state of our protagonists' minds, as opposed to highlighting action; that gloom and the pain felt when they are about to lose all their hard-earned money, with the knowledge that they would never be able to retrieve their losses.
