Pre-Kindergarten Program

At Step-By-Step Tutoring, we believe that children do well when they can. Every child is naturally curious, capable, and eager to learn, they just need patient guidance and the right environment to thrive.

Our Pre-Kindergarten Program introduces early literacy and numeracy through joyful, hands-on experiences. Designed and delivered by experienced Teachers and Pre-service Teachers within the Australian school system, these sessions build foundational skills that prepare children for a confident transition into school.

Lessons are taught 1:1 in the comfort of your home, allowing each child to feel calm, safe, and engaged in familiar surroundings.

Sessions are 60 minutes, with approximately 30 minutes each dedicated to Maths and English - adjusted flexibly to suit each child’s pace and interest.

Mathematics Foundations (approx. 30 minutes)

Our play-based Maths sessions build strong number awareness and problem-solving foundations through interactive, sensory activities.

Number Sense

Counting objects and actions (up to 10 and beyond as ready).
Recognising numerals (0–10) and connecting them to quantities.
Developing one-to-one correspondence and an early sense of quantity.

Geometry & Spatial Sense

Exploring basic 2D shapes (circle, square, triangle, rectangle) in the environment.
Using positional language (in, on, under, next to, behind, in front of) to describe spatial relationships.

Measurement

Comparing objects by size, height, and length using comparative language (bigger/smaller, taller/shorter).
Exploring non-standard units of measure using familiar items (blocks, hands, pencils).

Patterns & Sorting

Recognising, extending, and creating simple patterns (e.g. ABAB).
Sorting objects by colour, shape, size, and other attributes to build reasoning skills.

English Foundations (approx. 30 minutes)

Our literacy sessions focus on developing a love of language through stories, sounds, and play.

Letter & Sound Awareness

Recognising and naming letters of the alphabet.
Exploring initial letter-sound relationships and connecting print to speech.

Phonological Awareness & Early Reading

Playing with sounds in words (rhyming, syllables, beginning sounds).
“Stretching” and blending sounds to read and form simple words.
Building listening skills through read-alouds, songs, and rhymes.

Early Writing Readiness

Strengthening fine-motor skills for pencil control.
Exploring letter formation through tracing, drawing, and hands-on activities.

Our Teaching Approach

We use a step-by-step, explicit teaching model that builds understanding through play, repetition, and real-world connection:

Model – The teacher introduces and demonstrates new concepts through story, song, or play.
Guide – The child explores the concept with support and gentle questioning.
Independent Play – The child applies the skill naturally through hands-on exploration.
