Mechanical engineers help to plan, design, operate, and maintain heavy machinery - both power-producing machines (e.g. generators and turbines) as well as power-using machines (e.g. refrigeration and air-conditioning systems).
Mechanical engineers play important roles in our society. Among many other things, their core responsibility is to aid in the design and manufacturing of products we use in our daily lives.
Some examples of other things required of a mechanical engineer include:
Assisting in the research and development of machines and mechanical parts
Conducting tests and maintenance of mechanical systems
Ensuring designs and finished work meet rules and regulations
Quantifying costs of materials and labour needed for manufacture and installation
Designing and installing new and modified mechanical tools or machinery
Monitoring technical areas of manufacture, maintenance and repair of machines
