SYSC is a free week-long summer program for students in 3rd - 8th grade (2024-2025 school-year) who are interested in exploring science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects in the future. Curious and motivated students will have the opportunity to work with excelling high school and college students in STEM fields while exploring the diverse range of STEM topics (math, physics, chemistry, biology, and environmental science). The program includes interactive lectures on various STEM fields that are at a more advanced level than covered in elementary and middle school, along with hands-on experiments and projects that facilitates personal creative expressions and teamwork.
The mission of SYSC is to spark curiosity and expand the horizon in the young regarding their understanding of STEM fields, facilitating their understanding of STEM applications in our world, and explore their own potential and talent in these subjects. SYSC strive to give every child equal opportunity in access to science exploration and learning, therefore require no payment from the parents. We aim to expand the students' understanding of each of the STEM subject by letting them explore each of the five subjects (math, physics, chemistry, biology, and environmental science) through interactive lectures and labs. We also aim to encourage the students' innovative potentials by giving the students' the opportunity to build and create projects through hands-on activities, while simultaneously allowing them to develop their team-work skills through communications and collaborates with their peers.
SYSC supports the elementary and middle schools in Stanislaus county's mission to create and nurture future STEM leaders by providing the youth exciting opportunities to further their enthusiasm and experience with science outside of their school environments, giving them perspective on what STEM is and could be like for them in the future as they advance their knowledge in these subjects. This program also enhances the linkage between elementary, middle, and high schools and provides the children networking opportunities with their fellow driven and curious minds by providing a platform where the students can form connections among themselves and with their upperclassmen.
SYSC is non-profit organization led by a group of driven and STEM-focused student teachers, volunteers, and alumni (current college students) under the Math Olympiad club and Math Bowl club at Joseph A Gregori High School with the advisory of Mrs. Gaines, operating under the guidelines and support of the Modesto City School District.
