Competitive Counting & Probability

Introduction to Competitive Counting and Probability for Middle and High School Math Competitions 

This course will cover Counting and Probability from the point of view of MathCounts, AMC8, and AMC10 competitions. Any students attending and mastering these concepts will be well prepared to do well in these and other Middle and High School Math Competitions. The contents of this course, Counting and Probability, are typically not taught in the regular school curriculum and will benefit any students aspiring to participate in middle and early high school math competitions. So, while this course is most appropriate for Middle school students, many motivated 5th grade students and even high school students can attend and will equally benefit from this course and are welcome to attend.

Syllabus: 

Counting: Counting Basics, Venn Diagrams, Bowling Pins and Handshakes, Counting Outcomes, Casework, Factorials and Permutations, Combinations, Sticks and Stones, Pascal's Triangle.

Probability: Probability Basics, Compound Events and Counting, Casework and Probability, Probability and Combinations, Complimentary Counting and Probability, Geometric Probability, Expected Value

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of Pre-Algebra.

Grade Level: 5th to 8th grade

Class Days: Saturdays 02/10/2024 - 05/04/2024

• No classes on : 02/24/2024, 03/09/24, 03/23/2024

Class Times: 9:00 am PST.

Duration: 60 minutes

No of Sessions: 10 

Homework: There will be homework after each class, and Students should plan to spend about 1 hour/week.
