glu·cose
/ˈɡlo͞oˌkōs/
noun
A simple sugar which is an important energy source in living organisms and is a component of many carbohydrates.
Glucose is the main source of energy for your body, and it comes from the food you eat. Your body breaks down most of the food and turns it into glucose and it goes into your bloodstream. After your body breaks down the food your blood sugar goes up and when that happens your pancreas releases insulin, which is a hormone that works with glucose to get/ keep your blood sugar up.
Finding out which foods have what amount of glucose is very important for our health, especially for those with conditions that directly affect their blood sugar, like diabetes. Diabetes is when your body doesn't make enough insulin which causes your glucose levels to be too high, so you can see why it’s important for people with that to know how much sugar is in any food they're eating. Vigorous intermittent exercise can improve indices of glycemia in the 24 h postexercise period in apparently healthy individuals, says Michael C. Riddell. ( 2023 )
When your glucose is too high it can cause a lot of different symptoms, like; thirst, feeling tired/ weak, headaches, etc. There is a lot of harm that high blood sugar can cause so it is very important to be able to test how much sugar is in certain foods and how that will affect you, says Fiona J. Babir. ( 2023 )
