Core Belief:
Kids should be a part of building the world they want to inherit,
and they need to be a foundational part of the creation of the Metaverse.
In my classroom we work with a variety of fairly advanced hardware, but this year and as a part of my STEMPath journey I want to explore whether or not developing for a specific technology, holographic computing, has an impact on students' motivation
to study computer science.
According to a Burning Glass Technologies report, remote computing, including AR/VR (which also includes holographic computing), will be the second largest economic post-pandemic category of technology related jobs (2021). *

When I transitioned over from teaching kids about English literature to teaching kids about computer science I was amazed at the stats regarding gender in the field of comp sci. I thought of my own daughters and how many other young women might not have exposure and opportunities to comp sci offerings. If that is true with traditional experiences it is even more significant with advanced technology, so I decided to flip the script and get kids exposed to the advanced stuff from the beginning instead of needing to build up to it in order to change their perception of the world and what is possible.

High school is exactly the place to be having kids learn about and work with bleeding edge tech. If we wait until postsecondary to have kids start engaging with these technologies we have already minimized the populations and power of our students who will eventually work with technologies. To hear more about why this matters, please watch the interview Doug Konopelko invited me into on Focus on EDU.
Unity is a Real-Time Development Platform and we have been using this software in my classroom since 2014. Over the years students in my classroom have made everything from basic 2D games where controllable characters move around to immersive holographic experiences. Crafting Heroes plans to use this engine as our core development environment.
I am thrilled to announce that in the summer of 2022 I have been placed for my externship and will be working with the Unity Education Team to help with curricular alignment for certifications and technical tutorials/training!
