Stanley Ross Smith was a local architect, canal enthusiast and in 1978 Chairman of the Scottish Inland Waterways Association. In 1978, he and his wife purchased the narrow boat Thomas Telford and brought it to Edinburgh.

After Stanley & June Ross-Smith moved to Fair Isle, ownership of Thomas Telford passed to Ralph Allerdyce at Port Clifton on the Union Canal. The Barge was usually berthed there until 2019 when ownership changed again.
