This compact 3-bedroom home in Navi Mumbai belongs to an artist, hailing from Mahabalipuram. Even though this family of four had moved to Mumbai for business reasons about a decade ago, they still held their roots close to heart. With Mahabalipuram being famous for its granite rock outcrops and shore temples that have stood the test of time, it inspired a palette of materials that were natural and rustic in character. Materials such as marbles, natural quartzite(for the kitchen counter top), cane and hardwood furniture, furnishings in linen and leather all add warmth and vibrancy to the home.
As far as the floor plan was concerned, it made sense to open-up one of the bedrooms adjacent to the living and dining space, to create a flexible space. Since this bedroom was only occasionally used as a guest bedroom, it had much potential to be used on a regular basis. It now becomes an extension of the living room itself, while also doubling up as a study area for the kids, or a home office for the adults. Furnished with a sofa-bed, it functions as a secondary living room, but also converts into a bedroom when required. The sliding glass doors with blinds provide privacy when this space is being used as a bedroom.
